I know 2 people, an older friend, and a grandchild, who tend to use too much but it is because their taste buds are damaged. Both have been on chemo.....

Yikes. They had cancer? That sucks.

Everyone has a different tolerance for sodium based on genetics and personal habits. Why can't Mayor Bloomies let people decide for themselves?

Again, you're completely missing the point.

Even assuming we're in a world where Bloomberg is an evil dictator who automatically gets whatever he wants, and this is what he's decided, you can still have as much salt as you want.

He's not talking about "taking away" salt. He's talking about getting companies that make prepackaged food to cut some of the salt out of their ****, so that when a poor person eats a 79 cent can of pork and beans, they're not getting 3 times their daily recommended amount of salt.

If all of this happens and the companies cut back on the amount of salt and you're still not happy, guess what you can do? Add some salt.

    To each his/her own.

I am a marathoner and triathlete. I swim, ride, run, lift, nearly every day.

I used to be active, but age has slowed me down. My health must be good, as the doctors never tell me to do anything except lose a little weight. I submit that anyone over 60 who isn't 10-20 pounds "overweight" is probably not as healthy as they think. I have seen height/weight charts that allow for age, and those charts tend to agree with me...

Not everyone has to be a competitive athlete to be healthy. I still remember the first time I saw my new doctor after my former doctor went to Japan for study. I went in for my physical, she saw the initial blood work and basic measurements done before the face to face exam. She knew even before I stripped down based on those readings that I was athletic.

Good health is a function of many things. There is a woman where I work who has a great figure, but she is very unhealthy. She gets little exercise, apparently doesn't eat well, and has the highest sick leave rate in our department.

And if they want to suggestion that we cut back that's fine. My issue is with them apparently stating that if people DON'T then they'll start legislating it.

Setting aside the inter-governmental issues involved, what's wrong with a government in general passing legislation restricting the amount of salt permitted in prepackaged foods? The FDA already does essentially the same thing, on a far larger scale.

The only real issue I can see with this is that the City of NY doesn't necessarily have the authority to step in and regulate something that is preempted by the federal government, but I know BBerg's gotten some quality legal advice on the issue, so I'm sure they've thought it through.
