House Passes 2009 SCHIP Bill

And I'm sure that would go over as well as the prohibition did.

I would have no problem with people choosing to smoke if they would respect the rights of the majority of people around them who didn't smoke. However, since smokers, being the scum of the earth that they are, refuse to acknowledge the rights of the rest of us and their own children to not be subjected to their poison, yes, go ahead and ban it. Short of that, I have no problem with taxing it heavily to help with heath care programs, like SCHIP.

That's right. You heard it correctly. The Federal government is about to put a 61 cent tax on each pack of cigarettes in order to pay for the SCHIP program. Taxes will also be levied on cigars, smokeless tobacco, and all other tobacco products. This means that, if you are a smoker, or if you chew, the government is going to take more money out of your pocket and give it to someone else.

Now Bush had his problems (a whole crapload of them), but at least he vetoed this theft of money from taxpayers last year after Congress passed it. But there is a new moneygrubber in town, and his name is Obama.

Article is here.

An excellent editorial about what SCHIP means for smokers is here
.

The Senate is taking up the bill right now, and if you are against the Federal government redistributing YOUR money to others, now is the time to let your Senator know that a vote for this bill means one less vote for him when he comes up for reelection.

I wonder how many jobs will be lost when the tobacco industry finally disappears. Do you think it will be as many as the Steel companies lost when the Unions refused to reduce their pay scales and benefits to compete in a global market?

Lack of respect? Care to elaborate?

Like blowing smoke in the face of non-smokers. Sitting next to non-smokers AND THEIR CHILDREN in public places. Waving cigarettes in people's faces. Heck, I nearly got HIT in the face by a cigarette from a smoker who was smoking in a prohibited place.

Smokers are the scum of the earth. It is as simple as that.

Like blowing smoke in the face of non-smokers.
Then do not sit near them. I also refuse to believe that even a small percentage of smokers deliberately blow smoke in your face.

If people are performing a legal activity that you do not approve of, go somewhere else. Besides, most restaurants have smoking and non-smoking sections.

Sounds like an isolated incident.

Your argument is absurdly emotional, it is as simple as that.
