Republicans Object to Stimulus Dollars for ACORN - First 100 Days of Presidency - Politics FOXNews.com

The title is unfortunate and misleading, as there's no indication that any of the money is going to ACORN, but the content is worth comment.

Republican lawmakers are raising concerns that ACORN, the low-income advocacy group under investigation for voter registration fraud, could be eligible for billions in aid from the economic stimulus proposal working its way through the House.

House Republican Leader John Boehner issued a statement over the weekend noting that the stimulus bill wending its way through Congress provides $4.19 billion for "neighborhood stabilization activities."

He said the money was previously limited to state and local governments, but that Democrats now want part of it to be available to non-profit entities. That means groups like ACORN would be eligible for a portion of the funds.

$4.19B for "neighborhood stabilization"? It's also worth noting that we already do this, so it's not like it's some Obama-specific thing. I'm just astonished that that much money is routinely spent on things like this:

HUD’s new Neighborhood Stabilization Program will provide emergency assistance to state and local governments to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties that might otherwise become sources of abandonment and blight within their communities. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) provides grants to every state and certain local communities to purchase foreclosed or abandoned homes and to rehabilitate, resell, or redevelop these homes in order to stabilize neighborhoods and stem the decline of house values of neighboring homes.

...

State and local governments can use their neighborhood stabilization grants to acquire land and property; to demolish or rehabilitate abandoned properties; and/or to offer downpayment and closing cost assistance to low- to moderate-income homebuyers (household incomes not exceed 120 percent of area median income). In addition, these grantees can create "land banks" to assemble, temporarily manage, and dispose of vacant land for the purpose of stabilizing neighborhoods and encouraging re-use or redevelopment of urban property.

Does that seem like a good use of money to anyone else?

So state and local governments buy lands, abandoned property, and they refurbish them and sell them... sell them... to who?

If the plot of land was a nice plot of land to begin with, then there would be NO need for the government to buy it.

I could see this working if the states/local governments are using the money to buy up effed up territories and build schools. Not to thrilled about helping the low-middle income folks who, seemingly, don't have enough money to purchase the house to begin with.

is ACORN any good? Honestly, I've never heard of it before.

Agreed. HUD has some other programs that seem a bit crazy.

HUD Good Neighbor Next Door Program

Um, so I searched for "Revitalization Zones" in Durham, North Carolina and I didn't see any actual zone listings, but I did see three homes that were "refurbished" and whenever I clicked on it it told me the case number doesn't exist. So not only do I not know why I would buy a house in Durham, by some scrubs who share a name with a nut, but I also CAN'T buy the house because someone doesn't like to do the nittygritty work and make the listing available.

"Three Year Occupancy Requirement" didn't they make a movie about that. Seems like if they are requiring you to stay three years in the same home, then it must be really dire that they bind you to that land. Maybe work it.

You never heard of the voter outfit that has/had both voter registration and voter fraud cases out the wazzoo in what 12 states?

How in the hell did you manage that?

They registered people multiple times under different names. They sent people to pick up homeless and drive them to the voting booths while telling them to vote for Obama.

Even Obama had to deny he knew wth was going on in a debate or two. He "never noticed". MSNBC had to deny it mattered after crying every day about "stolen elections" for years..... on and on.

"never heard of it" sounds remarkably like "never noticed"..both of which IMO are a load of Bull Pucky.

WTF is neighborhood stabilization? Well at least they cut out the rubbers.

It seems to me that they are deliberately trying to make this bailout fail.Perhaps they want it to fail but wish to place blame of its failure on the republicans.

Seriously? You've never heard of ACORN before? Wow, I guess we can dismiss you as being an informed participant on these forums. Jesus ****ing Christ!

Y'know, its possible to be informed without having heard about a relatively tabloid-esque topic such as ACORN, Obama's preacher, or Joe the Plumber.

I love this post!
You are using so many words to call me "stupid". However, if you really want to I can take you out back and smack you around (all in a metaphorical sense) anytime you would like; yes I am talking about in debate-- I wouldn't want to cause you much excitement, as it seems to be easy to get you all excited.

Sorry if I had more important things to do then read about ACORN. Apparently it's a touching issue to you, and an important one, I am seriously very sorry if I have offended you in any way. I feel a little bit bad not knowing about something that you get off on.

I don't "get off on" anything to do with politics or scandals, but thanks for playing.

ACORN has been involved in voter fraud in every election since 2000. They register dead people, Mickey Mouse, the Dallas Cowboys football team, etc... If you haven't heard of ACORN, you haven't been paying close attention to the past 5 elections at all. Let's just say that ACORN is equivalent to taxpayer money going to "faith based" initiatives, only voter fraud is actually illegal.

Maybe next time instead of looking so ignorant, you'll actually do some research before commenting. But since most of the public is uninformed because they don't watch more than one media outlet, you're in good company. I just find it interesting (and entertaining) that someone would be posting on a politics forum and expect to be taken seriously when they don't even know who ACORN is and why a taxpayer would have an issue with our tax money going to them.

1) I don't watch TV.
2) Past 5 elections. Obama I was 19 years old. Bush Jr. 2nd Term I was 15, Bush Jr. 1st Term I was 11, Clinton 2nd Term I was 7 Clinton 1st term I was 3

So, no I wasn't paying close attention to the "past five" elections.
How about instead of calling people stupid, you man up and actually inform and not act like a complete asshole.

Obviously to Democrats it does.

Which is why the Republicans should let this package pass without one of their votes. It is designed to fail. To inflate the bottom line on future budgets, to entrench socialist programs for the benefit of the Democrat Party.

If it is so great, Obama can stand there with his Libs and tout its success. Obama needs Republicans for when it fails... not to make it succeed. This is why his "I won" and "don't listen to Rush" comments were so numbskull like politically.

He rammed a stick in his opponents eye... and though they may not reveal the irritation of the moment, I hope it woke them up and got them playing hardball.

These programs should never pass and the republicans should do everything they can to make sure it fails. Because once it passes it will not go away.

I walked by the ACORN national head quarters for years and had no idea who they were. Then a friend got me to go door to door one night collecting money for them.

I just gotta laff. :)
