Challenges loom as Obama seeks space weapons ban

Why the hell is that dumb dick seeking a space weapons ban? Who the hell has got them or about to get them? What is this, a preemptive ban?

Presumably this would include the banning of weapons that disable satellites?
What about spy satellites?
Are these considered to be weapons?

And we should all fight like gentleman by standing in lines and taking turns shooting volleys at one another. That is how wars are fought.

This ban is senseless. If space weapons become practical and/or useful then China, Russia, the US, or any other major power is going to build them regardless of treaties.

Treaties go out the window when inevitable war occurs. The winners prosecute the losers for broken promises.

I don't know man. This seems to be holding up quite well: South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty (1985) | Nuclear Arms Control Treaties | atomicarchive.com

How is this South Pacific region a strategic location for nuclear weapons?

I would still argue that if for some reason nuclear weapons would become of vital importance in the area for some reason then a country may choose to remove itself from the treaty while trying to avoid foreign and domestic media condemnation.

That is, treaties are fairly useless in and of themselves without enforcement, which no strong country will readily submit itself to. A treaty violation merely helps others countries masquerade as having the high moral ground on an issue.

"It's politically sensitive, but it's going to happen. Some people don't want to hear this, and it sure isn't in vogue, but — absolutely — we’re going to fight in space. We're going to fight from space and we're going to fight into space. That’s why the US has development programs in directed energy and hit-to-kill mechanisms. We will engage terrestrial targets someday — ships, airplanes, land targets — from space." - Commander-in-Chief of US Strategic Command (1994-1996), Joseph W. Ashy

Seriously, this would be a stupid ban. Without the potential for military development, nobody is going to spend the money to develop technologies we need to make space travel a reality. It would be like banning the use of jet aircraft for military purposes in the 1940s.

I am opposed to this space weapons ban because it also bans our most powerful designs for space crafts (like the Orion)

I would like to see a Space Weapons ban.

Not me. When aliens come with their space weapons, how will we be able to defend ourselves without them? :doh Atleast I know that Captain will have his lightsaber handy- I'll just stick with him.

I've set my phaser to "stun". ;)

If any hostile species comes to us, our nuclear weapons will be about as effective as bows and arrows.

Of COURSE weapons should be banned from space.

After all, weaponizing space gives is a large advantage over our adversaries -- and its just not fair for us to have such an advantage.

Better stick with me! I've got the germs. I can beat them.

Has hell frozen over and is that a pig flying outside my window?

:2wave:

no that's hell flying and a pig freezing over.
Duh

The pathetic part here, that Obama thinks that signing some document will prevent the weaponization of space.

IF, and God Forbid this happened, a war broke out between the USA and China, the first thing they'd do is go after our GPS, Com and Recon birds. Anyone here REALLY think China would say "Gee, we signed that treaty, we cannot do this?"

Obama gets a fail here.

In fact, that is how we're likely to know that they -are- going to war with us.

Obama gets a fail here.
Yes, well, no one is really surprised.

The article specifically states that he also plans to look at threats to US spacecraft, offer contingency plans to keep information flowing, and a plan to defend US spacecraft. Basically he is saying there should be a ban on weapons in space but the US will still be putting measures in place to protect itself and it's spacecraft.

I have no problem with this. In fact it is quite an intelligent move. This sets precedence that America will not be placing weapons in space and will not accept the placement of weapons in space by any foreign nation, and seeks other nations to follow. This removes the likelihood that the world will end up in the same situation that is currently is in with Nuclear weapons.

He who holds the high ground holds the advantage.
Space is the ultimate high ground.

Peace should be obtained through acceptance and agreement, not through fear.

If the powers of this world all agree to not utilize weapons in space and also to act against those that do this world will be a much better place then if everyone had a few thousand nukes attached to satellites pointing at each other.
