Carter: If no Palestine, Israel sees 'catastrophe'

If we look toward a one-state solution, which seems to be the trend _ I hope not inexorable _ it would be a catastrophe for Israel, because there would be only three options in that case," Carter said.

One would be to expel large numbers of Palestinians, which he said would amount to "ethnic cleansing."

The second would be to deprive the Palestinians of equal voting rights, which he said would amount to "apartheid."

The third would be to give the Palestinians equal voting rights, and therefore the majority, he said.

"And you would no longer have a Jewish state," Carter said. "The basic decisions would be made by the Palestinians, who would almost very likely vote in a bloc, whereas you would have some sharp divisions among the Israelis, because the Israelis always have different points of view."


This is exactly how I've come to see the situation. Frankly I don't really see any other way of viewing it, the whole Zionist project is gradually becoming demographically unviable. Sharon basically acknoweldged this fact with the start of unilateral disengagement, the problem was, and still is, that the settlements run too deep and the borders would be too unnatural - especially around Jerusalem to having any lasting two state solution. No Israeli government is ever going to give up Jerusalem or expel hundreds of thousands of its own citizens from their homes.

When people in the Middle East talk about the destruction of Israel, this is what they mean, everyone in Palestine living as equals in one state in all of historic Palestine.

Carter actually says he hopes this doesn't happen, it just looks more and more like it inevitably will. I've sort of believed this ever since Camp David collapsed.

Perhaps you'd like to expand on exactly what you find so frivolous about his positions...
