GAZA IN RUINS 'Who Has Won Here?'

Gaza in Ruins: 'Who Has Won Here?' - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International

In the Gaza Strip people are returning home -- or to the rubble that was once their home. Many are blaming Hamas for the destruction because the militants hid among civilians and attracted Israeli fire. Yet no one dares to speak out openly.

"I used to support Hamas because they fought for our country, for Palestine," says Sadala. Hamas stood for a new start, for an end of corruption, which had spread like cancer under the moderate Fatah. In the 2006 elections Hamas won the majority with their message of change, said Sadala, who earned a living in the building business. Gesticulating wildly, the 52-year-old surveyed the ruins of the bedroom: "That is the change that they brought about. We were blasted back 2,000 years."

"I've changed my mind about Hamas," Abu Abed says. "I can't support any party that wages a war that destroys our lives." He is particularly pained by the fact that Hamas is still selling the cease-fire as a victory.

One of his neighbors weighs in: "Many people are now against Hamas but that won't change anything," he says. "Because anyone who stands up to them is killed."
Seems like they don't like the "change" Hamas brought. Good.

Next time Hamas sends "change" to Israel, I hope the Israeli's knock them another 2000 years backwards. It's the only way they seem to be learn.

    *sigh*

All right, tell us Zimmer, What has Israel told Hamas? They certainly haven't weakened them to any meaningful degree, as was pointed out in the article.

This does show a point I've been making since the conflict began. Hamas is in control of Gaza, when you say something like "The people of Gaza must overthrow Hamas before we allow food in" what you are saying is that the people of Gaza need to have a revolution then side with the force which destroyed their homes.

It's a retarded, self-fulfilling prophecy. I'll tell you what will happen: Hamas, aka the people w/Guns, will kill everyone who openly confronts them. Then Israel will blame the people of Gaza for living near them and begin the bombing campaign to respond to some bottle rocket attacks.

    And nothing will change.

    Those weren't bottle rockets... and...

...The force which destroyed their homes was Hamas. Even the locals know this.

Something will change when the Israeli's defeat Hamas and their bitter clingers.

Until then we'll have this continued game of ping-pong.

Then I ask that Israel defeat Hamas.

They clearly don't have the backbone to actually go in and solve the problem, instead settling to make bombing campaigns and limited incursions, which solves nothing.

This situation will not be "fixed" by shooting at each other. But thankfully President Obama got the right person to be the special envoy to the Middle-East. President Bush failed so hard on that.

Name a Sec State who has produced a permanent cease fire in the ME. Not even Dr Kissenger, probably one of the most accomplish sec states in recent history. So Hillary is going to perform magic?

    Again you are wrong.

The Special Envoy to the Middle-East is George Mitchell.

The only people who can rid Gaza of Hamas, are those that voted them into power in the first place.
Whether they will do this whenever free elections are due is quite something else.
So far as I can recall, anytime a radical organization gains power they have a tendency to retain that power.

Oops, should have said Puppet, there again perhaps my Freudian slip was more accurate.
