WHAT HAPPENED TO TOUTING THE FREE MARKET?
Well in the free market Americans tend to love big 'ol cars and trucks. Suburban housewives who want to drive around the neighborhood in monster trucks and take their off road vehicles to Costco on Sunday. Overseas they opt for much smaller faire. You can't talk about letting the California legislature force folks to give up their big cars while commenting on the free market in the same breath.

It's not just the plants that are effected.

    Dealerships.

    Parts/Maintenance.

    Specialty Areas.

Sure, eventually they will get jobs. But ponder this for a second.

The number of newly laid off Americans filing claims for state unemployment benefits has soared to 589,000, while people continuing to draw claims climbed to 4.6 million, the government said last week. There's been such a crush that resources in New York, California and other states have run dry, forcing them to tap the federal government for money to keep paying unemployment benefits.
The Associated Press: Rising unemployment spares no state in December

Just imagine what roughly 30 million more Americans out of a job is going to do.

Of course I understand that it is the fault of the company... however, they've been so deep rooted in our system for so long now that the effect would be disastrous!

AH HA! Here we go, you are one arrogant snob you know that? Who the hell do you think you are to say what kinda car I, or anyone else should drive? I want an SUV. Something I can travel with my family in comfortably and safely, and for hauling stuff around. And I just like em.
By that logic, no one should be able to force anyone to do anything, particularly when it comes to the safety of others.

Want to shoot guns wildly around? Who are you to say that I can't do that!

Fact of the matter is that big cars pose a threat to smaller cars and are almost entirely unnecessarily. The vast majority of SUVs only go off road when they crash. Furthermore, SUVs have a higher rate of roll over and corresponding deaths.

I have a 2008 Ford Focus and it hits 35mpgh
Sure you do. Frankly at this point I don't believe much of anything you say.

Don't drive a small car... drive a hummer.
Going to ignore that post as usual. Run away. Just like Navy.

Actually it may help them in the long run. Aside from European and Japanese with the exception of a few Korean car firms, the rest of the world is unable to meet our standards and thus barred from selling vehicles in the US. Furthermore, this forces Detroit to innovate, something GM and Chrysler haven't done in ages. Barriers to entry generally helps firms that already exist in the market.

That's not going to happen. They're not going to force you to buy a new car.

Or when they slip off the road because they are being driven by a bunch of Southerners who don't know how to drive in the snow. (I wish I was exagerrating about this.)

Oh, so we're going to turn this thread into an anti-SUV thread now. Let's concentrate on the evils of SUVs and their horrible owners. Yes, it's SUVs that are endangering the entire globe, especially when conservatives drive them; because they are obviously not trying to save the planet when doing so.

I was actually not being completely serious in the comment - it was more about the inability of SOutherners to be able to drive in the snow than about SUVs, but having said that, the vast majority of people who have SUVs don't need them. I have no desire to drive an SUV. They are hard to drive in a crowded urban environment and even harder to park.
