OK, so Pope Benedict is getting on his high horse and condemning America for not practicing what he preaches. But before he throws stones at us, he needs to clean up his own back yard. His condemning America for allowing abortions is fine and dandy, but he has said nothing of his own past, when he was a member of the Hitler Youth Movement.

Now, I know in advance what some Pope supporters are going to say - "He joined because he had to". My response? NO, he didn't have to. He could have followed the footsteps of Peter, who was persecuted for standing up to Rome, and who was martyred. I know, I know, it is hard for someone to risk death like that, but Pope Benedict isn't just an ordinary person. He is the Pope, for Christ sake. He REPRESENTS Christianity, at least the Catholic version of Christianity. I think the church could have picked a much better representative of the faith. There were plenty of people in his own village in Germany who risked prison camp by hiding Jews. Ratzinger (Benedict) chose not to get involved. There was a death camp close to his home, so he saw what was going on, and still chose not to take a side, and even obeyed Adolf Hitler, and joined the Nazi Youth.

And this is the man who dares to tell America to wipe the mote from its eye? How about he remove the beam from his own eye first?

[/rant]

One final note: I have made it clear in previous posts that I do NOT believe the UN owns the United States. Let me make it equally clear that neither does the Pope, especially a religiously lukewarm one like Benedict.

He's just going through the motions though really, isn't he? He's doing what the pope does. I couldn't care less what the Pope thinks, but that's not due to him being a Nazi bandwagoner some 60-odd years ago. I don't care just because he's the pope. Does he really have so much credibility and influence in the modern world that his tortured past is a big deal? I think most people think of his postion as a primarily political one now. He is paying his political dues; saying what he's supposed to say.

Just one thing, he joined the Hitler Youth. As in, children. As in, you're asking a child to sacrifice his life. Comparing that to Peter's martyrdom, or saying he should be judged on those actions forever, is a bit of a stretch.

As for his lambasting the US, well, I could care less.

You make it sound like he had a CHOICE in being a member of the Hitler Youth.

I would say his post Nazi-Germany life is a direct repudiation of the evil of the Nazis in Germany.

As for abortion, he is simply re-iterating the teachings that the Church has promoted long before he became the Pope. He is not claiming to own the United States just as the UN is not. He is stating his opinion of the US decision. While the US can choose or not choose to heed his admonitions, don't forget that the US has the world's fourth largest Catholic population.

WOW! What a Shock!:rofl What a bunch of hypocites:roll:

Dan, I think you are suffering from post papal depression.

That's a completely different issue.

I this case, re-communicating 4 people who broke the pope's authority, one of whom believes historical data refutes the claim of 6m. The church has said it strogly disagrees with him, but that those are his personal views.

I don't believe their going to have any power or anything like that, so it's a non-issue really.

Ah yes, the Pope has been picked as a target, isolated, personalized and polarized just as per rule #12.

Onward Saul Alinsky Libertarian soldiers!

Another statement from the ignorant regarding the Church, its teachings, and its history. You have tried this one before Kali. We are onto your tactics.

Hypocrite:

Though shalt not kill. Then you go and burn "witches".

Though shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's (goods). Though shalt not bear false witness against they neighbor. Then you go and rape choir boys and the higher ups cover up the crime.

The church has always been and will always be a joke. Practice what you preach? I don't think so.

Edit: Thought of another one: They did some great work during WWII. You know, they whole opposing Hitler left and right thing. Oh wait, they didn't do ANYTHING! Yeah, way to stand up for the less fortunate. You should be so proud of the Catholic Church.

Even though I am not a Catholic and do not support their religious views the misrepresentation of this pope borders on the criminal.

Pope Benedict XVI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Following his fourteenth birthday in 1941, Ratzinger was enrolled in the Hitler Youth—as membership was required for all 14-year old German boys after December 1939[7]—but was an unenthusiastic member and refused to attend meetings.[8] His father was a bitter enemy of Nazism, believing it conflicted with the Catholic faith, according to biographer John L. Allen, Jr. In 1941, one of Ratzinger's cousins, a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome, was killed by the Nazi regime in its campaign of eugenics.[9] In 1943 while still in seminary, he was drafted at age 16 into the German anti-aircraft corps. Ratzinger then trained in the German infantry, but a subsequent illness precluded him from the usual rigours of military duty. As the Allied front drew closer to his post in 1945, he deserted back to his family's home in Traunstein after his unit had ceased to exist, just as American troops established their headquarters in the Ratzinger household. As a German soldier, he was put in a POW camp but was released a few months later at the end of the War in summer 1945. He reentered the seminary, along with his brother Georg, in November of that year.

He as all children were forced into the Hitler youth. His father was an anti Nazi he lost a family member to the Nazi genocide and the first real chance he got he deserted from an army that he was drafted into and he never fired a shot in. So much for the Nazi supporting pope, As too him laying down his life he was just a kid and his faith was in development. Read the history of Abraham. He was not born with faith. He acquired it. Peter denied Christ three times and then ran and hid before his own faith became strong enough to face martyrdom

I agree with that, even though I am opposed to abortion and think abortionist should be treated no different than murders I still think the pope and the UN does not own the US.

I can see the pope being pissed at US Catholics who voted for pro-abortion politicians because Catholics are supposed to abide by catholic rules and morals, and everything else that comes with Catholicism. A catholic supporting abortion would be like a far right conservative claiming to be a liberal when he does conservative things or a far left liberal claiming to be a conservative when he does liberal things.

How old was he when he went into the Hitler youth? He was born in 1927, same as my mother. Both my parents had to join the Hitler Youth. I calling bull**** on you. You don't know WTF you're talking about.

Read about the life of Peter. The Pope represents the church.

No, you talked bull**** about the Hitler Youth and what he should have done. You telling me my parents should have known better and stood up against it as young teenagers? You shouldn't have gone down this road, but you did and you're wrong.

Aren't conservatives the ones that have said Muslims should stand up against the radicals? Why is it any different that saying those should have stood up against the Nazis and not joined them?

Individual people within the church were guilty of those crimes, not the Church as a whole. Those involved will have a far higher penalty to pay. The Church is also about forgiveness as well, a concept that many people here simply do not understand.

The church has always been and will always be a joke. Practice what you preach? I don't think so.

The Church is the most enduring institution in Western Civilization and helped to SAVE Western civilization from barbarism, preserve literacy, and bring Western Civilization to its later golden age. That would NOT have happened (at least as quickly as it did) without the Church.

No non-government group did MORE than the Church did in WWII. The Pope spoke out against the treatment of Jews in Germany long before the US entered the war. The Church saved hundreds of thousands of Jews from the as chambers. THe Pope himself opened up Castle Gandolfo to Jews seeking to protect them from the fascist government in Italy. Please inform yourself before making such ignorant statements.

He was FOURTEEN YEARS OLD for goodness sake. He WAS ENROLLED, he didn't join by choice. He refused to attend meetings and his father was also against Nazism. What do you want, a 14-year-old to take a gun to a meeting and start firing?

Do we really give a rats arse what Pope Benedict thinks?

Who is "you"? Also, should I hold "you" responsible for what your family or affiliates did hundreds or thousands of years ago?

I've said things like this before but I'm not sure why you think I would hold fourteen year old boys to this standard. When I say Muslims should stand up against radicals I am more specifically referring to Muslim men, I just assumed as much would be obvious.
