Israel 'admits' using white phosphorus munitions - Times Online

Israel claims that their use was legal.
And yet by using Phosphorus bombs or Shells in a civilian area there were quite clearly in breach of Geneva Convention.
Quoted from article,
(Phosphorus bombs can be used to create smoke screens, but their use as weapons of war in civilian areas is banned by the Geneva Conventions.)

What I am unsure of is Israel a signatory of Geneva Convention on warfare?

For that matter has Palestine signed up to Geneva Convention on warfare?

Israel is the country in question here. But Palestine, not being a country, yet, is not a signatory. Does that mean a country can use chemical weapons in civilian dense areas if they enemy they are going after is not a signatory of the Geneva Convention? I highly doubt it.

I'm pretty sure the US used WP rounds in WII, I have a hard time believing they didn't ever use them inside cities. Particularly considering that in many cases it was the only way to defeat German tanks with superior armor.

People saying that Israel has "gone too far" have simply not done the math.

Hamas was voted in at 70 %.

70% - 21% = 49%, and thus allows for another party or leader to be in the majority.

The CIA says that Gaza contains 1500000 humans.

21% of 1500000 = 315000

Let me know when Israel has completed their work.

I like your reasoning. :2wave:

Group accuses Israel of firing white phosphorus into Gaza - CNN.com
There is no prohibition per se against white phosphorus in conflict. But the timing and location of its use are restricted.

For example, it is illegal under the protocol to use white phosphorus against any personnel, civilian or military. It can be directed only against military targets. International law says incendiary weapons cannot be used where civilians are concentrated.

A house north of Gaza City was hit Sunday by something that observers contend may have been white phosphorus.

Israel admits using phosphorus bombs during war in Lebanon - Haaretz - Israel News
the third protocol of the Geneva Convention on Conventional Weapons restricts the use of "incendiary weapons," with phosphorus considered to be one such weapon.

Israel and the United States are not signatories to the Third Protocol.

In November 2004 the U.S. Army used phosphorus munitions during an offensive in Faluja, Iraq. Burned bodies of civilians hit by the phosphorus munitions were shown by the press, and an international outcry against the practice followed.

I may not agree with everything Israel does but even I can see the absurd amount of blatantly overcritical journalism and false accusations that target them.

And Israel has the cheek to cry about a few rockets? Absolute hypocrites.

But Israel has to show off the size of its testicles.

It's how things are done in the ME.

Perhaps you people missed this . . .

They are under no obligation not to use this ordinance.

The people it is landing on, HAVE IT COMING.

Breaking treaties has a price, and these Rocketeers are now paying it.

The price might be willie pete all over a cousin while he was in his home, and SO BE IT. These people HAVE IT COMING. They and theirs have made war on the Israelis, and thus they were ALL reaping their deserved beatdown.

Hamas is the one that has turneed the entire area into a war zone
the fact that they choose to fight from civilian dense areas is thier fault, their responsibility

From the January 13, 2009 edition of The Jerusalem Post:

The international Red Cross said Tuesday that Israel has fired white phosphorus shells in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, but has no evidence to suggest it is being used improperly or illegally.

The comments came after a human rights organization accused the Jewish state of using the incendiary agent, which ignites when it strikes the skin and burns straight through or until it is cut off from oxygen. It can cause horrific injuries...

the IDF said Tuesday that it "wishes to reiterate that it uses weapons in compliance with international law, while strictly observing that they be used in accordance with the type of combat and its characteristics."

How does that prove its being used improperly? If hundreds of people were hurt by it then maybe you'd have a point. But all you have a few isolated incidents of minimal collateral damage.

It would be like arguing a civilian was hurt in a battle so the israelis are targeting civilians. It just does not follow given the more likely conclusion that a few people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. We can thank hamas for putting the civilians in such a predicament.
