Bush commutes sentences of former US border agents - Yahoo! News

Typical of his Presidency....Bush commutes the sentences of the border patrol agents who shot the man in the back.

Granted ... this man was a suspected drug dealer, nevertheless, he was unarmed and shot in the back and killed. Even worse, they lied and tried to cover up the killing.

This is great news Ramos and Compean are free. And they didn't shoot the low life repeat offender illegal alien drug smuggler in the back. They shot him in the ass.

IMO Ramos and Compean Should have never been prosecuted. They gave the drug dealer a green card. Can you believe that ****. Anyway he was caught smuggeling drugs again.

Being an unarmed "repeat offender drug smuggler" gives green light to a couple of lying vigilante thugs to shoot him in the back?
Wow....where have this country's values gone...when it is not only ok but deemed by some to be hero-ic to then lie and try to cover up thier illegal actions.

Thank God!

Those men actually deserved pardons in my opinion.

Good for Bush, but really good for them.

Honestly....why do you believe they deserved pardons?

They shot an unarmed man in the back, lied about it and then tried to cover it up by trying to get rid of the spent shell casing evidence.

I'm curious as to why you believe they deserved to be pardoned.

He wasn't killed. In fact he was arrested again, after the shooting, for smuggling drugs into this country. He's serving a 57 month prison sentence for bringing ton of marijuana into the U.S.

Osvaldo Aldrete Davila story on AMW.

I thought he had been killed....nevertheless.....what about their actions make you believe that they deserved to be pardoned?

they haven't been pardoned.

Sgt Rock is the one that said they deserved pardons....nevertheless lets rephrase the question:

why should their sentences be commuted?

FYI:

Bush didn't pardon the men for their crimes, but decided instead to commute their sentences because he believed they were excessive and that they had already suffered the loss of their jobs, freedom and reputations, a senior administration official said.

These guys were given a 10year+ sentence for doing their job- trying to protect the border. I agree they tampered with evidence and that was wrong, but ultimately they were just doing their job and had to pay for it.

How is shooting an unarmed man in the back "Doing their job"? I doubt that is part of the job description or training.

Great news. They should have been pardoned, but at least they are now free.

Too bad they didn't kill that savage.

 at you defending a criminal savage illegal alien scum

How am I defending him? Requiring border agents/police/law enforcement to live by the laws of this country the same as everyone else does not mean you are "defending scum"....try to be a little less melodramatic.

they've already served two years for shooting a drug dealer in the butt and will have to deal with having criminal records for the rest of their lives. no one is saying that border agents are completely above the law, and the fact that bush commuted their sentences rather than pardoning them only goes to reinforce this.

Meh you want to see to law enforcment agents suffer for 10 years each for shooting the asshole in the ass.

They didn't know he was unarmed. He had attempted to smuggle more than 700 pounds of marijuana into the US and took off when they tried to arrest him. As border patrol agents, they know the danger of drug trafficers and defended themselves. They did not shoot to kill, so I don't know what the problem was. Defending themselves and the border is part of their job description, they are border patrol agents.

They weren't "defending themselves"....that was their claim that was debunked. They tried to alter evidence to cover up their illegal actions.

No....I would like to see law enforcement officers do their job in the way that our laws require. I believe that the laws of this country should apply to all equally. People shouldn't receive differential treatment when they break the law because of their status.

they did not break the law, they were railroaded. They believed the testimony of an illegal alien over the Law enforcement officers.

They were drug smugglers. They were shot in the back because their backs were facing the agents while they were running. If they had turned around, I am sure they would have shot them in the stomach. Either way, they deserved it. The agents should have finished both of them off by shooting them in the head.

Here's why:
  • The suspect was committing a felony crime by smuggling 743 pounds of marijuana into the country.
  • When confronted he fled. During the capture he physically assaulted a federal agent and him left cut and bleeding on the ground.
  • His assaulting the federal agent allowed for him to escape arrest.
  • While escaping he pointed an object at another federal agent, and that agent in good faith believe that object to be a gun. The suspect was obviously a violent offender. He shot in self defense.
  • The suspect fled into Mexico, taking with him the object he pointed at the officer.
  • The Department of Homeland Security went and found the suspect, and offered him complete immunity and a temporary green card to come back and testify against these officers. Immunity! A Mexican drug smuggler gets immunity after bringing in 743lbs of marijuana, assaulting a federal officer, and escaping arrest.
  • DHS lied to members of Congress about the case.
  • At the trial the suspect lied on the stand.
  • At the trial the Border Patrol supervisor lied on the stand despite testimony from mulitple agents that contradicted him.
  • The federal prosecutor lied to the trial court and the appeals court about the suspects drug connections.
  • One of the charges against them, tampering with the judicial process, was vacated under appeal.
  • The only real bad deed these men committed was not completing agency mandated firearms discharge reports. To which the punishment is an unpaid suspension for five days.

Ramos-Compean.

This case was so outrageous that it united members of Congress on both sides of the aisle. It was labeled an absolute abuse of prosecutorial power. People will riot in the streets when it happens to a normal citizen, but when it happens to the cops it doesn't seem to matter much.

They should have been fully pardoned and reinstated with back pay and damages. Their careers are ruined for doing their damned jobs.

I don't think the marijuana is a big deal. I think it should be legalized anyway. I mean, after all he could have been bringing something far worse into the country. That being said, he obviously shouldn't have assaulted the federal officer, pointed an object at the federal officer or fled. I seriously can't believe the guy got immunity after all of that.

When you shoot someone, always assume it might kill them. There are arteries the thickness of your pinky in your legs. Who cares if he was bringing in 700 lbs of weed? Weed isn't dangerous in itself. Shooting people running away from you is not defending yourself

Weed is not dangerous, but it is illegal. Transporting it across international borders is illegal. See lerxst post (the one that you thanked) as to why they were defending themselves.
