The head of the Alabama NAACP, however, wants Mobile's Azalea Trail Maids to stay home on Inauguration Day, claiming the group reminds him of slavery.

"These are not just regular costumes. These are the costumes that remind someone of the plantation in Gone with the Wind," Edward Vaughn said in a phone interview.

Vaughn went on to say the group would be the laughing stock of the Inauguration. County leaders say nothing could be further from the truth.

"We want everyone to know that these young ladies do not need to be identified with slavery," said Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine.

"I don't see what the dresses have to do with racism. I don't see it. It's just a regular dress to me. Just a dress they wore back in the day," said Carolyn Tius of Montgomery.

Organizers stand behind the tradition, but opponents say tradition is the problem.

"We needed something that could show Alabama's great progress rather than something that shows a shameful past," Vaughn said.

Perhaps they should have "ghetto Girls" for the next one? What a putz this guy is.

 What an idiot. I had no idea what a Trail Maid was and by this guys outrage I expected some sort of slavery attired or themed costumes and this is what I found

How these dresses remind anyone of slavery is beyond me. I just think of like a Southern Belle from long ago. Just because the South did have slaves back in the day does not mean everything (especially dresses) in southern culture = slavery.

I think groups like the NAACP have outlived their usefulness. They are dinosaurs who do not realize that they are extinct. They are so desperate to remain useful that they are looking for racism where there is none.

Obama is going to swear in on the exact same bible Lincoln did. The NAACP should rise up in yet another of their just causes and stop this blastphomy at once. Burn all books using the word "Negro" and burn Huckleberry Finn for using the "N' word . Burn all FACTS referring to our history, NOW!!

step 1. Demand equality
step 2. Demand more
step 3. Separate yourself from the rest of the country
step 3. Call everything racist in order to reinforce your separation and force people to give in to your demands.
step 4.
step 5. Profit

And is there something that the NAACP'ers don't find racist?

Black people can't be racist.

That's racist! You should've worded that "African American" people can't be racist.

You know what's hilarious though? Watching a black american call an African immigrant racist.... Seen it and laughed my ass off.

You are both technically incorrect.
Color does not necessarily lead to Racism.

Racism is between different races not necessarily between peoples of different color.

The problem with the NAACP like a lot of activist groups (PeTA anyone?) is that they don't choose their battles wisely. They get up in arms over completely absurd issues. So when a legitimate issues come up that warrant such an activist group to get involved people have trouble taking them seriously because they see what they got up in arms about beforehand. It's a typical type of "boy who cried wolf" scenario.
