Jan. 1 Attack By CIA Killed Two Leaders Of Al-Qaeda

washingtonpost.com

A New Year's Day CIA strike in northern Pakistan killed two top al-Qaeda members long sought by the United States, including the man believed to be behind September's deadly suicide bombing at a Marriott hotel in the Pakistani capital, U.S. counterterrorism officials confirmed yesterday.

Agency officials ascertained this week that Usama al-Kini, a Kenyan national who was described as al-Qaeda's chief of operations in Pakistan, was killed in the Jan. 1 missile strike, along with his lieutenant, identified as Sheikh Ahmed Salim Swedan, the sources said. Both men were associated with a string of suicide attacks in Pakistan in recent months and also allegedly helped plan the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa.

Great job boys!

 I guess winning the war here is no longer in vogue........
I'm still all about this thing being won, you just started the thread the wrong way, you said it perfectly the first time with nothing to add.:2razz:

What does "winning the war" even mean, at this point?
Kill all the Al Qaeda leaders?
Who cares?
There are a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand ready to take the place of each one killed; this is largely the result of US conduct in the region.

Have you ever encountered one of those situations where everything you do- anything you could possibly do- is making things worse?
Where it finally occurs to you that your best option is simply to shut your mouth and go sit on your hands in a quiet room somewhere?
I'm encountering these situations a lot lately, or maybe I'm just recognizing them more often. Maybe in the past, I encountered them too, but I simply wasn't able to stop doing things, to stop trying to fix things, when my interference was obviously making them worse.

I think this is the impasse we've come to in this "global war on terror".
I think it's a good idea, at this point, that we stop doing things, stop saying things, and simply go sit on our hands in a quiet room. Preferably, here in America.
Until something changes, everything we do from here on out only makes it worse.

nice 10, well while you surrender, thankfully most of us see this as a winnable war and something that needs to be done.....

Well done but 'winning the war' is impossible
How does a country plan to defeat a ideology?

I am concentrating on obliterating Al Qaeda. not too concerned about the whole "war on an ideology" angle.....

Its the ideology that ensures the continuation of Al Qaeda.
Yes, a few leaders has died. More will take their place.
The war is a waste of time

Hmm, Al Qaeda killed a member of my family and several friends, including NYPD and NYFD....

I strongly disagree with you.

Where you see futility, I see a target rich environment.

US/UK/"Coalition of the willing" has also killed members of families and friends and torn apart 2 coutries.

War = Good recruiting tool

I believe it was Tucker who said by teaching them the joys of bacon.

There has to be consequences for aggressive behavior. How do they think they will defeat a country?

Both sides look to break their opponent's will.

I like America's chances.

If we don't beat these people down, they will seize control as they spin it as defeating us.

The only thing that can harm the west is itself and over reacting is one of them.
They already have control, how many years. A number of renowned militaries and they are still recruiting and sending weird messages on Al Jazeera

yeah well war is hell.... I for one do not want to see another attack on American soil, and breaking up Al Qaeda is a big part of that.

There hasn't been another attack on American soil yet there has been on the allies of this war.

We could harm ourselves by overreacting, I agree. Iraq is evidence of that IMO.

But we must go after Al Qaida.

Care to tell me about the "weird messages"?

Everything we've done since all this began has strengthened our enemy, rather than weakening it.
That is because our enemy is merely an ideology, an ideology which hinges- at least in part- on the premise that Americans are arrogant, oppressive, and stupid.
Nothing we've done since those towers fell has indicated otherwise.
Everything we've done is exactly what "terrorists"- islamic extremists- want us to do.
Everything we do, have done, or can do, as a military presence in the middle east, strengthens their position and brings them more support.
Clearly, it is time to regroup.

You know the reactions from Al Qaeda after attacks on Madrid, London etc.

I disagree, i see no immediate need to run into the moutains chasing something that will not be won.
Waste of time and money. I'd much rather we spend those troops and money on UK borders

They attacked us. Why should we not go after them?

Why should we back down and not them?

In America, we deal with our crazies. We don't export them.

So shall we convert to islam as well? what else do you reccommend?

Well if you want i could help you ... =P

I want all British troops withdrawn from ME, I have no idea what Americans want from their government

Know when you can win a battle and when you can't.
This isn't a conventional war but a ideological and PR one and hell, Al Qaeda has won all it wanted to achieve.

Nonsense, please show me with links and examples as to how al qaeda is strengthened.
