It is almost inconceivable that for the Gas that Ukraine is supposed (By Russia) to have siphoned off for it's own (Ukraine) use would be greater than the amount which is supplied to France, Italy, Austria in addition to the supplies to all the other Country's Russia (Gazprom) is supposed to be supplying.
So one might suppose that Russia is attempting to get it's customers to exert pressure on Ukraine to get Ukraine to settle with Russia.
I sincerely hope that those country's supplied under contract to Gazprom take this matter to the International Court.
Russia must realize it cannot be allowed to destabilize it's customers.

If it goes on long enough, Europe might realize it doesn't really need Gazprom. If that happens, they should just boycott it with the excuse that it an unreliable source.

Well, fellas donít you think smthís really wrong not only with the Ukraine making gas theft sort of lucrative business but with the EU idly watching at it as well?
Disruption of Russian gas supplies is huge challenge for many EU countries relying on Russian gas export greatly. Itís the question of Europeís economic survival in present crisis especially. Still the EU Czech presidency mainly and EU leaders in general demand the restoration of gas supplies a.s.a.p. while refusing any decisive action to teach the guilty Ukraine a lesson!
Do we all have to take to the streets to make the EU stand for Europeansí interests firmly? I hate the idea.

Gazprom has been selling natural gas below market rates for years. Their proposed increases still put the price well below market rates. Couple that with the appearance of Ukraine "skimming off the top" and you have a serious problem. International theft by a NATO aspiring country of Russian product certainly did not gain national attention. Russia feebly attempting to exert its own power does.

Carry on with the blame Russia mentality though.

Re: New cold war in Europe as Russia turns off gas supplies

Lets take a reality check. The countries really hurting from this "shut off" are the following:

Czech Rep (78% of its gas comes from Russia)
Austria (67% of its gas comes from Russia)
Slovakia (100% of its gas comes from Russia)
Hungry (51% of its gas comes from Russia)
Greece (81% of its gas comes from Russia)
Turkey (82% of its gas comes from Russia)
Serbia (90+% of its gas comes from Russia)
Bulgaria (90% of its gas comes from Russia)
Finland and the Baltic states (100% comes from Russia but are not effected)
Poland (46% of its gas comes from Russia)

Now with the exception of Turkey and Poland the above markets are frankly small, using each less (some way less) than 10 billion cubic meters of gas. They use relatively very little gas, but of course the effect is considerable because of the dependency on Russian gas.

The heavy weight gas users of Europe are Germany, Italy, France, Spain, the UK and some what Belgium. Of those Germany gets 39% of its gas from Russia, Italy 27%, France 16% and Beligum 4%.. the rest.. 0% from Russia.

So, while the "shut off" is bad for eastern European countries, it is hardly "bad for Europe", as in all of Europe. In fact the country that will be hurt most is probaly Ukraine as it gets 72% of its gas from Russia and is one of the biggest users of gas in Europe.. only Germany and the UK use more.

But I suspect that Ukraine will make a deal soon as they cant live without gas from Russia, like many former soviet satellite states.

Bwaahhahahahaaaaa...to the International Court? Whatever happened to nations settling their diplomatic agreements, well, you know, diplomatically?

What is this fetish with the litigation and deference to unelected and unaccountable judges thousands of miles away?

Russia must realize it cannot be allowed to destabilize it's customers.
Maybe those customers should have considered more properly the unintended consequences that their over-reliance on Russian might produce.

Germany's gas supply wasn't cut off. The Russians know who butters the bread.
