Tom Craddick has just been toppled as the Speaker of the Texas House. The man who toppled him? Moderate Republican Joe Straus, considered a political lightweight, but whose meteoric rise in Texas politics made it possible.

This is a real bombshell here in Texas. Oh yea, one more thing - Good riddance to Craddick.

Craddick...I remember the name but, I'm not sure....

As for Strauss, the fact that he is a moderate makes me want to cry. I don't want a moderate, I want an actual conservative, a reagan conservative on steroids!

For Speaker I want a moderate because, in Texas, the Speaker is all powerful. For instance, there was one bill last year that had overwhelming support from both parties. Craddick rapped his gavel and ordered that it not come to the floor. Craddick is also the one who ordered homeland security to investigate the Demcrats who refused to show up on the redistricting bill. Craddick was also joined at the hip with disgraced congressman Tom Delay. Craddick is also Governor Perry's lapdog.

The crap Craddick was doing is not Democracy, unless one prefers the Russian or Chinese definition. IMHO, in Texas, the Speaker has way too much power, and with that much power, Craddick abused the living crap out of it.

What I want in a speaker is not a mini Adoph Hitler or Mao Tse Tung, but a person that will work for the common good, and that is why the toppling of Craddick was the best thing to happen in Texas in many years.

Seems like what needs to be done is to strip some of the speaker's power, more than anything.

If he is indeed all-powerful, having a moderate won't guarrentee anything, rather, it would just keep bills that he thinks are "too conservative" or "too liberal" from reaching the floor. Basically, when you say "moderate" I just can't help but think "might as well be democrat". People like Arlen Specter, Susan Collins, and all that, just ruins the image of "moderate" to me.

First of all, I agree with you 100% that the Speaker's power needs to be stripped.

Secondly, after reading about Straus, I can see that he won't be blocking bills, but allow all of them, left or right, to come to the floor for a vote. That is good. I can get behind that, and if what he does in the future mirrors what he has done in the past, he would be my pick for governor.
