Tehran offers to 'protect' Ebadi

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Tehran offers to 'protect' Ebadi

Protection in Iran usually means either an unlimited sequestration in Evian Prison or a lifetime at the end of a rope hanging from a crane.

Ebadi is the lawyer for my boss' brother, Jamal Khanjani, who is one of the 7 imprisoned leaders of the ba'hai' leadership in Iran. She is also no longer allowed contact with her clients, who were at first charged with the bombing of a mosque. When it was shown that they were innocent of the crime, they were then charged, again without evidence, with being agents of Israel, and Iran wants to execute them. My boss himself, barely escaped Iran with his life after the mullahs first took over, and emigrated to the United States. His daughter, after graduating from the University of Montreal, went to Iran to teach in a school for women, something she could have been executed for, but Ebadi's exploits at the time kept the authorities at arm's length. Ebadi herself is renowned for using the Quran to shame the mullahs and win her cases, which is why they want her out of the way. They are the Pat Robertsons of Islam. Problem is, over there, there is no Constitution (of the US kind) to keep them in check. Thank God we have ours, and because of it, religious wackos will never wield that kind of power here, no matter how hard they might try and wish.
