"Jena Six" Teen Shoots Himself
MONROE, La. — A teen convicted in the "Jena Six" beating case shot himself in the chest and was taken to the hospital Monday, days after his arrest on a shoplifting charge, police said.

Mychal Bell's wound isn't life threatening, said Monroe Police Sgt. Cassandra Wooten. The 18-year-old used a .22-caliber firearm in the shooting around 7:40 p.m., she said.

Wooten believes Bell was upset over media coverage of the arrest last week.

"I think he was upset over the incident ... and didn't want to be in the news again," she said.

Bell was one of a group of black teenagers who once faced attempted murder charges in the 2006 beating of a white classmate at Jena High School. The charges for all of the defendants were reduced.

I can remember all the debates surrounding the Jena 6 we had. It seems hard to believe one of the kids is back in the news again and is back in trouble with the law- or is it?

Poor kid. Just can't do anything right.
 
I don't think there was ever much doubt that this was a troubled kid (to say the least).
 
does anyone have the proper mailing address where i can send a card with instructions on how to properly commit suicide? :)
 
Looks like those reduced charges were not justice. If in jail, this would've never have happened?

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a rash of southern black male teens committing (or attempting to commit) suicide this month?
First there was the kid in Florida who posted, on an internet forum, a webcam video of himself ODing on prescription meds.
Then there was Billey Joe Johnson Jr, the Mississippi teen who shot himself in the head following a routine traffic stop.
Now this.

It's sad.
I keep thinking, you know... the prospect of President Obama, and the prospect- like a glimmer far on the horizon- of an end to systematic racism should've given these young men hope.

But of course the things that made them too sad to go on living were probably personal, and had nothing to do with society, politics, or anything external at all.

I suspect it's just a press fixation, like flesh eating bacteria.

As for somebody finding the will to live because a completely unqualified person was elected to high office and happens to have similar coloration to the suicidal individuals (while sharing almost none of their heritage,) well, that is a pretty big stretch.

And this folks, is what's wrong with the Liberal mindset. Group think and identity politics. Couldn't we just be hopeful for all Americans? Or is that too much to freaking ask?
 
For what it's worth, this was the fourth member of the "Jena Six" to have been subsequently arrested or convicted of unrelated assault/battery charges in the 2 years since the incident.
 
He attempts suicide because of media attention. So, the medias response is to give him more attention on his failures at committing suicide?
My 2 month old niece knows more about ethics than the press. Leave the man alone, I am sure there are other Plaxico trees to bark up.

You really are gonna sit here and deny that certain groups still face racism in this country? Obama being elected is a change in the right direction and maybe all those good ole' white males in charge got a Big wake up call:roll:

Obama is not going to change the plight of blacks in America. In fact it is going to continue to get worse.

Because some groups have had to/ and do struggle MORE than other groups.

Obama enjoys the same priviliges and powers of all the "good ole' white males" to which you refer. Racism is a class issue.

Reporting the news they think people are interested in, especially sensational news, is what they do. In this case, all you have to do is look at this thread to see they are right about people being interested.

If someone doesn't want media attention, I'd suggest that they try to avoid assaulting other people.

I don't see races, I see people, Americans. I don't wallow in the past I look to the future. But then, I'm one of those evil conservatives that thinks wrongs should be righted when they happen, not whined about for decades.
