BBC NEWS | Business | Pound hits new low against euro

Amazing the collapse of the UK economy. I saw this coming.. I warned you Brits that your economy was much more fragile even than the US economy, while the Eurosone seems to come best out of this situation, having by far the most stable and reliable economy. Investors appreciate that.

The UK is most likely headed in the same general direction as Italy, down the drain. Its final, your time is over, the UK is about to be completely irrelevant. The French won, they now control most of Europe alongside Germany. Last nail in the coffin is occurring in this day and age.

After looking at this the US economy seems rather solid and the Eurosone seems like a paradise.

Many countries are going through a bit of turmoil right now. The UK's banks bought a lot of mortgages from the US; that hurt them. They had a housing problem of their own, that hurt them. But in terms of what the UK produces, they still have a lot of economic viability. I wouldn't say they're going down the drain like Italy. Recessions happen, it's part of every economy. Where you calling Japan done when it had uncontrolled deflation? When it's economy was in the crapper because they couldn't spur any consumerism? It took them a few years to get past that stage and recover. The UK has higher ability to recover, and it will. The countries of Europe will go through recession at times as well, but even if many of the countries that make up the EU suffer hard times, I wouldn't say that Europe is over with. Too much is produced for it to be over with. The US economy may be bad right now too, we've had a bunch of crap blow up at once. It doesn't mean the US is through either. It just means we need proper regulation to prevent things like this from getting to the level they did this time. We'll recover and come back.

Well, I agree with much of this. But the UK economy has been a sincere worry of mine for a very long time. Last but not least I am extreamly worried about the way they are handling the financial crisis, by borrowing money and giving it away to banks. The country is already indebted as it is, it hardly needs to throw borrowed money on the flames. The real issue with the economy in the west is its sustainabilty. The way we are doing things now and the direction we are headed in is not sustainable at all, its a path towards certain economic ruin, I hope the financial crisis can be a wake up rather than just one step further into a larger and broader collapse. I hope we can turn the tide, that we can have a viable and sustainable economy based around stability and sound fiscal responsibility. If we cannot do that, no one will trust our economies. Continental Europe as it is, is the most stable and fiscally responsible region in the world, the US have headed in another direction with enormous waste of money, deficits and debts, budget mess and so on, the UK is worst in the west when it comes to these things, far worse than the US, and then we have Italy, the worst of them all, but less noticeable since its part of the Eurosone.
Take Germany for example(which I will easily claim is the richest country in the world), a whole different story, sure they have their problems but they aren't deeply rooted in the way of thinking, its not a gambling economy, not fiscally irresponsible nor unstable, and their economy is strong where it really counts.

What do you or anyone expect with a Socialist/Communist Government in power.
Oh, yes I do realize that some people believe this Brown Government to be handling the economy under broadly business friendly methods.

But wait awhile, see what Obama will do to the US economy along with people like Pelosi /Frank calling the shots in Congress.
Better to wait awhile before patting yourself on the back.
2009 is going to be OH SO MUCH WORSE THAN 2008.

I have no doubt that the democrats will at least bring back fiscal responsibility to the US economy. If they can save is yet to be seen, but rather unlikely, it needs DEEP changes, like all economies of he west, including Europe, but especially the UK, Italy and Spain.

2009 will be deep in trouble, even 2010, but beyond that there is hope.

2009 will be worse because that is the trend, not because of Obama. It's not like a new President is a magic cure-all pill. But, we'll no doubt see people blaming the new administration for a continual deterioration in economy, as if that has anything to do with it.

Hey MAximus,

When the British Pound goes down the drain, that hurts Labour, specifically, Brown. What happens when Labour is hurt? The Conservatives, Cameron, benefits. The Conservative party has been on the fence when it comes to the EU but, in the end, You can bet they will oppose it.

Besides, all economies have their struggle. Why should Britian sign away its sovereignty just because they are hittin a few bumps on the road? I mean, you know, Its not like the EU's economy is perfect.

Nah, but the continental economy is far better of than the UK, even Italy atm seems like a good bet compared with the UK.

I didnt say the UK should just jump into the EU full hearted because of the economic crisis in your country. I am saying that you need to consider "reinventing" your economy based around fiscal responsibility, sustainability and real wealth creation rather than be so "speculation" based.

God your an idiot.

If Britain gave half a **** at least about your pathetic Euro crew, you'd find a way to turn this around and make them look like the crunch hasnt even been felt there yet. You love fantasising about how great the EU is managing with the crises. If you looked closer, infact, to the finer details, you'd actually realize your F*UC*K*ED mate like everybody else.

HTF does france and germany win? What exactly do they have control over, what possible influence do they have over us? There in the EU. No soviergn. Its a LOOSE-LOOSE game baby. Nobody wins.
