BBC NEWS | Americas | The new first lady of style?

"I'd like to see her bring a sense of fashion back to the White House, just like Jacqueline Kennedy did in the 60s," says Mary, who is visiting the museum [of first ladies inaugural dresses] from Pittsburgh.
Style magazine Women’s Wear Daily believes Mrs Obama is an icon in the making.

Maybe I'm hopelessly out of chic but I've never been impressed with Michelle Obama's fashion sense. I think her hair is kind of scary looking and her clothes are boring.

I've also never been super impressed with Jacky O either (the gay community has threatened to excommunicate me if I don't recant).

First wives always look like ladies in their 40s and 50s that wear...what ladies in their 40s and 50s wear.

I'd be way more impressed if she wore designer jeans, chucks and a designer t-shirt. That'd be a genuine first lady fashion fiat.

People are going to be impressed when the first lady is young (comparatively) and halfway attractive, and they're going to admire her "fashion sense" when she's tall and statuesque and therefore able to wear clothes well.

It's like the Palin thing; I couldn't understand why people found Palin "hot", but obviously it's a relative comparison. "Hot" compared to other presidential candidates. "Stylish" compared to other first ladies (such as Barbara Bush, god help us).
It's not like if Palin and Michelle Obama and Jackie O were walking down the street, we'd all go panting after them because they're so "hot".
It's just that they're hot for politicians (or politicians wives). They're attractive as far as that goes. Considering the competition.

You are so young, NCFY, that you probably can't even see how anyone in their 40s could possibly be considered attractive.
I was that way too, in my early 20s. They all just looked equally old and boring to me.
You'll probably begin to view middle-aged people differently as you approach middle age yourself. I did.
Weirdly, I now think young people are boring. Even to look at. No character, no experience. Dull and pie-faced, most of them. And fat, too. They all pretty much look like TOT, to me, young men in their 20s.

I don't think everyone in the 40s is unattractive at all. When I was in high school I had a real thing for older guys.

I do, however, think that the older you get the uglier your clothes get.

Well, that's true.
I once had a closet full of 90s hipster clothes: Betsey Johnson minidresses, Kenneth Coles and Docs, and drawers full of expensive lingerie.
Now I've got work uniforms, ratty teeshirts, torn-up jeans, and one pair of shoes: chucks.

Maybe the older you get, the less you care about clothes.
I gave all of mine away when I no longer needed them, and I've gotten more pleasure out of seeing other people wear them than I ever got out of wearing them myself.

Yeah exactly, your priorities change. And your money becomes needed elsewhere. You can't go out and buy the new season (if you even have the time to know about it) if your kids need school tuition and you have a mortgage.

I'm not saying this is bad, I'm pretty happy my parents bought me food instead of buying themselves shoes, however it is a reality.

I think First Ladies can still afford cool clothes, though.
If they're unstylish, it's probably not because they can't afford clothes.
I'm sure designers would happily outfit them for free, just for the publicity.

What I'm saying is that clothing made for women of that age is made with the assumption that their market has fallen out of (or at least behind the curve of) the fashion game.

Maybe it is just me.. But.. I always find Michelle looking awkward in a dress and she seems uncomfy:confused:

Do not get me wrong she is a lovely women but she appears awkward and I always think a pantsuit would be better for her. She looks good no matter what though:cool:

Didn't Laura already have a tasteful air of fashion?

As you so correctly said, WHEN.

I agree, but Hillary got such a lot of crap from the media for wearing pantsuits, i'm sure the Obamas' publicists have advised that it would be best for their image if Michele wore dresses.
There is already too much talk about her wearing the pants in the family, so to speak.
They're trying to soften her image and feminize her as much as they can.

It's a shame first ladies have to be married to presidents.

I agree about the hair, she needs a new hairstyle. Something fierce, like her. A cute little afro with some banging headbands and wraps or something a little longer and sleeker. As for her style, she's got a great figure and should start showing it off a little more.

We should have elected Thompson or Kucinich.

I think her face is kind of beat too.

Be still my racing heart...:)

I swear with her hair the way it is she reminds me of Zira from Planet of the Apes. It could be her mannish frame, too.

My Dad says she reminds him of a woman from Sandford & Son. I forget who though. Esther?? My Dad is not a racist he just thinks he is funny:roll:
