Coal for Christmas: Brooklyn man's pardon revoked

Re: Bush discovers that he is pardoning a Democrat.

Not sure what's so funny? Per the article, it was discovered that the guys father contributed money to the Republican Party and other issues had come to light. I think this speaks to the character of Bush rather than your ill fated attempt to demean it.

Re: Bush discovers that he is pardoning a Democrat.

That really sucks for that dude, if he was on the list of pardons anyway and got denied after he was told he'd be pardoned, just because his family contributed money. Especially on Christmas Eve.

I never understood why presidents don't just go gung-ho with the pardons during their last weeks in office. What's Bush worried about? That his approval rating might go down?

He's worried about the principle of showing favoritism to campaign donors. Principle is something many Libs can't understand.

And he's worried about the appearance of impropriety. Appearance is virtually the only thing most Libs all understand.

I understand, I just wonder why he should care at this point. Especially since it sounds like he was going to pardon the guy anyway, before he found out about the campaign donation. It's not like Bush has to worry about public disapproval.

I could see this maybe being more of an issue if he had issued the pardon after his first year in office. But now?

Everything is a partisan issue to you, isn't it.

He's only going to be president for a few more weeks. This is certainly an odd time to worry about the appearance of impropriety. He can pardon every campaign donor, and I won't complain. Everyone who will ever disapprove of Bush has already moved on. ;)

Re: Bush discovers that he is pardoning a Democrat.

And speaking of pardons, on a more political note: When are we going to get a president who pardons every non-violent drug offender in prison? That would do more than any government program ever could to alleviate crime and poverty.

Alas, it doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon.

As if you never have nor ever would say anything about the possibility of high level corruption?

Quite the opposite. It would destroy tens of thousands of prison jobs and put hundreds of thousands of people without marketable skills back into the labor force. Recipe for disaster.

Yeah instead of spending money on training programs for non-violent drug offenders so they CAN be a positive to society, let's just keep them locked away.

Sorry but I fail to see a reason to keep the marijuana user behind bars, just because some upity people in power can't get it through their thick skulls that marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes.

I am still waiting for Bush to pardon Scooter Libby and Tom Delay.

Oh man - that's just cold. Where's the part about the guy being a democrat though? I didn't see it in the article

If it happens it will on Jan 19th

I really don't give a **** who Bush pardons.

Criminalizing something like drug use/possession/sale/whatever makes no sense. And if your only justification is that it creates prison jobs, that's a horrible excuse. We could criminalize drinking, cursing, gambling, and being mean to people for the same reason.

After stating your thoughts on the matter, I see.

I'm not arguing that it's bad policy. I'm just arguing that trying to turn a few hundred thousand convicts loose within a span of a few months would be a disastrous policy that no serious candidate for President should even consider. Even if they were all non-violent and seriously trying to stay on the straight and narrow, it would be a national catastrophe.

Re: Bush discovers that he is pardoning a Democrat.

I was just thinking, what other man could go through what Bush has gone through as president and still have tens of millions of people think you're doing a good job?

At this point that's tens of millions of people who support you, basically, no matter what.

I don't see what would be so catastrophic about it. The automakers have laid off workers because business is bad. The banks have laid off workers because business is bad. Why should the prison industry be any different?

Because in addition to all the prison workers, the economy would also be hit with all of the prisoners all at once.

Sorry, but I don't think that people should be imprisoned just to make it easier for everyone else to find jobs. Call me a bleeding heart liberal. :2wave:
