With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise

Well as long as they get rid of their company jets.

As miniscule as the actual impact of this is, you'd think that legislators would realize the symbolic importance of their actions

Yep, nailed it. I am completely incensed about things like this, Louisiana tried to do the same thing this year, we are in the bottom 10 in everything good and top 10 in everything bad and our reps would've been the highest paid in the region, I say, if we must pay our representation it should be graded proportionally to their output.

As is quite normal for Politicians.
They say : "We understand your pain at losing your jobs, we are 100% behind you" but you need to understand we cannot allow our own standard of living to be reduced.

Said what?!

And, where the money is coming from...the 700 billion?!

I heard from a TV news show (because the majority of TV news programs are no more than entertainment shows) the question if politicians should receive a higher salary in order to avoid for them to become corrupt. But, this news has confirmed that the increasing of their salary is already corruption in action.

Congressmen must play fair with this, and the same percent amount in the increase of their salaries should be by law also given to every worker and retired person in US. I suggest to vote for the "other candidate" next time if the current congressmen want their re-election in the next years. This action will send a good message to each one of them.

No doubt that the president Bush administration's legacy is a complete mess, he has lost the control of everything around him in his last days in...in...in power?

All those currently receiving Social security payments actually receive a greater percentage increase than that which Congress awarded themselves.
Having said that, no worker would automatically receive anywhere near that percentage.
What is undeniably wrong with this business of Politicians rewarding themselves for their own perception of having done their jobs well.
Patently this is not the case.
If Auto Company bosses can voluntarily limit their own recompense, obviously recognizing the mistakes they made in running their Company's, then why cannot Congress also at the very least limit their pay to that which they already receive.
It is patently obvious that an enormous amount of the responsibility of this latest Financial meltdown is due particularly to Congress NOT either enforcing regulation and their insistence that anyone is entitled to own their own house regardless of whether they can or could afford to pay for it.

That is LEADERSHIP.
Lead by example.

Someone should list all the goodies these folks get, and tax "advantages".
Then list the full amount.

As an aside:
There should be a new law.
Anyone working for the government (living from our labor as a "servant") forfeits their right to vote in national and state elections; exception being the military as they put their asses on the line for us (their votes should count double).
