ROGERS, Ark. – An Arkansas woman has given birth to her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar delivered the baby girl by Caesarean section Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. The baby, named Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar, weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long.

"The ultimate Christmas gift from God," said Jim Bob Duggar, the father of the 18 children. "She's just absolutely beautiful, like her mom and her sisters."

The Duggars now have 10 sons and eight daughters.

Jim Bob Duggar said Michelle started having contractions Wednesday night. She needed the C-section, her third, because the baby was transverse. Jim Bob said both baby and mother were doing well Thursday night.

"We both would love to have more," he said.

I believe that Mr. Duggar has real estate holdings. They live in a huge house. The kids are very well behaved, but the parents are sorta timid and don't even seem capable of yelling at a child.

They are a religious family and have strict rules of behavior but they all seem happy.

Oh, well, congratulations to the Duggar Family in Arkansas!

wow...well if it makes them happy. But there's really no need for this sort of thing anymore. Wonder if they're some version of Mormon. Catholics seem to have stopped having huge families.

They are members of an evangelical Christian movement called Quiverful, which holds that children are a blessing from God and that husbands and wives should gladly accept all the children they are given.

Couples in the movement also believe that the husband is the head of the household and the wife is submissive to him, while the children are submissive to both. The girls wear long dresses or skirts and tops, while the boys wear slacks and polo shirts.

What can ya say about this family? They don't collect welfare. They home school their kids.

They will grow up to be taxpayers when all the boomers have retired. They won't be in prison. They'll be the type to stop and help when someone needs it.

I'm not saying anything bad, or that it should be illegal or anything. I'm just of the opinion that on the whole we don't really need huge families anymore. Most of that is rooted in the fact that children used to die...a lot. So large families ensured that some amount of the children would make it to reproduction age. We've gotten quite good with medicine and human physiology, so now the vast vast majority of children make it to adulthood. They can have their 18, 20, 25 kids if they want, I won't stop them. But I will do a double take when I see it, and I will think that it's rather unnecessary.

Also, you get 3K per kid, so that family isn't currently paying any Federal taxes..I don't know if you get money back for having tons of kids; probably not else everyone would do it. Probably just takes your effective tax rate to 0 and stops there.

Oh no, I was just adding some more to my comments in the opening post, really.

I'm thinking with this couple it's a religious thing. My parents had seven kids because that's what Catholics were supposed to do.

No they're not paying taxes unless he's making quite a lot. But those kids will be paying a bundle in taxes unless they decide to take after the parents. In 5 generations that would be 1.9 million Duggars.

You're right! It's time for a preemptive strike here. We can't let this become a nation of Duggars, we must take action now before it's too late!

I'm not sure what religion they are(I think they have their own services at home), but the parents believe in the "quiverfull" method or something like that. Basically as long as dads spermicidal arrows have eggs for targets, they are going to keep going.

As long as the family is productive and a positive part of their community, I don't care one way or the other. Its not like its something thats going to catch on, in popularity.

Damn, they're gonna take over. I've seen their show on a couple times and they seem like great people. I couldn't do it, but more power to them.

Yes, they are all nice kids. Well behaved and helpful. And I don't see any yelling at them.

If the parents around here could just teach their 1 or 2 children how to say please and thank you I'd be thrilled! What if they could teach the kids not to litter!?:)

if memory serves, ffrom when they did a show about them on cable, the father and eldest son are both court reporters.
and the big ass house htey live in, they built themselves
it is a big ass long ranch
more power to em

As long as they are not mooching off tax payers to take care of all those kids then should be allowed to have as many children as they want.

In one of the shows they explained their finances. It's amazing how they budgetize (word? lol) They are virtually debt free and shop wholesale and for clothes and shoes buy at thrift stores to save hundreds and thousands of dollars. They save up for what they want and buy it, without purchasing anything on credit. Many families much smaller could learn alot from that.

Yeah, I saw when they went to the thrift store and got a bunch of clothes. I bet she's a couponer, too.

Oh, the groovy cousin came to visit who wasn't so religious. They went to a religious theme park which nobody watching had any idea such a thing existed.

Jon and Kate should just drop off their eight kids for a couple of weeks and nobody would notice. Well, they might notice that brat, Cara. ;)

I can't speak for Catholics worldwide but in my church it's not unusual for families to have 4-5 kids.

Sunday: Today kids we are going to church.

In general there is a declining birth rate in the USA, so we should be grateful that these folk are helping to keep our native population growth rate from declining ever faster.

Why do they all look like replicas of each other down to the last child? It's like watching somebody grow up or one of those diagrams explaining the changes a person goes through as they grow. Disturbing.

Well yeah, that's all over the first world countries. If it wasn't for immigration our population is declining.

When people were freaking out about Jesus Camp I had to just roll my eyes.

The kids growing up in downtown New Orleans are monsters, literally. I would love to have nothing but Jesus kids running around here. They are a thousand times better off in life than the project kids.

Jesus Camp was f'd up. It actually made me think that homeschooling shouldn't really be allowed. But whatever, I'm not responsible for the ignorance of others. But as for project kids, there's lots of factors that go into that. It's not a religious thing; it's a poverty thing.

I wonder how much TLC pays these families? I'm fairly sure Kate plus 8 and Mom and Dad plus 85 Kids are number 1 and 2 for them in the ratings.

Oh, and there's the little people too.

I'd really like to see fewer families having children, but of those that do larger numbers. (Not this many perhaps.)

The do all look healthy and happy though.

Not really; you can already tell which girl is "the pretty one"; third from the right, middle row.
She'll grow up to be a hellion. Her parents will disown her. Her sisters will hate her. In fact, they already do. Her brothers like her, and will secretly keep in touch with her throughout their lives, but they won't tell anyone else in the family that they do, because they don't want to deal with the fall-out.
