Just saying. I'd rather have my wife on the rag 24/7 then 18 kids on my ass. I have enough worrying about one kid breaking my stuff and trying to eat paint or w/e it is she's trying to eat lately. Like for example our cat.

So, they have a large family and they choose to homeschool. That makes them freaks? Or is it because they have devout religious beliefs?
I think I called them Jesus freaks and not just freaks...although... 18 kids...

But to answer your question. It's because they have devout religious beliefs and home school.

I think home schooling can be great as long as the kids also participate in extra curricular activities of a nonacademic nature so they can learn to interact and cope with people outside of their family. Oh, and I shouldn't forget to mention that I think the teaching parent(s) should be able to qualify to get a teaching (even substitute) job in the school district as well. Under those circumstances I think home schooling is a great option.

On the basis of my (admittedly limited) exposure to home-schooling, it is my impression that home-schooling is as much about what the parents don't want their kids to learn, as it is about what they do want them to learn.
I don't believe it's right to cloister children in order to shield them from knowledge and ideas.
To send one's children into the world without knowledge is to send them out unarmed and defenseless.
It seems to me that the ultimate goal of many home-schooling parents is that their children will never go out into the broader world of mainstream society at all, but will remain voluntarily sequestered for life.
I don't view this as a realistic hope, nor a positive approach to life in general.

The few homeschooled adults I have known have been fairly ill-adjusted individuals.

The Duggar's home sits on 20 acres which they purchased for their children should they want to build homes on it.

20 acres isn't much at all.
My family, for instance, still has 70 acres on the lake (when I was a kid, we had about 500; they sold most of it during the 90s).
My dad, aunt, and uncle, and my aunt's husband and my uncle's wife all live there.
    That's five people, total.
If I wanted to, I could move my family out there.
But to me, that would be too close for comfort.
    I need space.
18 brothers and sisters plus two parents on twenty acres = one acre per person.
And that's not even counting their families.
    That will never work.
