Labour forced to abandon plans to make police more accountable to local communities through direct elections | Politics | The Guardian

I think this is a huge shame as it wouldnt have been a bad idea. Though I think the points being made about politicisation are a valid concern, espicially as here in Stoke-on-trent there would be a risk of the BNP taking over. I understand some parts of the U.S have a similar system to whats being proposed here. How does it work out for you?

Direct elections of individual police officers seems like a horrible idea to me. At some point the government needs to have control over its own actions - how many thousands of ballot items can you really intelligently make a decision on every cycle?

I think the idea is more that you elect the person in charge of policing in a given town, a bit a sheriff i guess
