I'm hearing he's being held by Iraqi police. I doubt Americans are having anything to do with him.

Re: Shoes thrown at Bush on Iraq trip

Much as I dislike Bush, he is a sitting US president and the lack of security there appalled me. You'd think that someone would be on the ball enough to notice a reporter removing his shoes in the middle of a press conference; that alone should have sent red flags up to the secret service.

If a visiting dignatary... even an unpopular one... were assaulted while under our protection by an American reporter, it would be a national shame and embarrassment. And yes, that reporter would end up charged with attempted assault.

For me, seeing this was frankly horrifying. All I could think of was what if there had been explosives ala the shoe-bomber in those shoes. I've seen the assassination of one American president; I don't want to see that ever again.

I don't think the story meant at present. More like he was tortured before this incident, if true.

While his family lived in Houston, Texas, George W. was sent back east to enroll at Phillips Academy, a private school in Andover, Massachusetts. Although George W. became actively involved in sports, playing baseball, basketball, and football, his high school academic record was far from exceptional. However, through his family's powerful connections, Bush landed a spot at Yale University in Connecticut, where both his father and grandfather had attended.

At Yale, Bush was a popular student. He became president of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and enjoyed socializing, watching and playing football, and dating. Grades were not a high priority, and because of his mischievous behavior, Bush had a few minor run-ins with the law. Despite his background of privilege, Bush became more at ease with all kinds of people in college. "I was never one to feel guilty," he said about his wealth and family connections. "I feel lucky."

I think they were probably confident there were no guns or grenades in the room and felt it was a safe enough environment. The pesident showed his stuff with his quick reflexes; with the second shoe he held up his hand expecting a lower aim but not willing to drop below the podium. He also showed his always gracious attitude at being the butt of this so called free speech by upholding it each time he has spoken about it. The most critical thing he said was "I don't know what this guys beef" was.

What sort of cruel mother****er finds kidnap, torture, and death amusing? That man was kidnapped and tortured. He went through unspeakable hells, his friends and family have been killed, and all Bush can say is that he was 'amused'?

**** I hate your President, America. He makes me sick to my stomach.
I watched the above link, and I also saw it on the Sunday News programs, plus an interview of the president by Martha Raddatz and didn't hear the president say he was amused.

I also did a word search for "amused" or "amusing" on this incident, and came up with nothing like that. Did I miss something? Perhaps this is just another case of "projection" where some people see and hear what they expect to see or hear.

Yes he is, and his heartbeat is below 60. I wonder, since Obama has begun smoking again, if he will be in as good shape 8 years from now after serving two terms.

And it is precisely because of people like yourself with their dismissive attitudes to the plight of women that the falling status and freedoms of women in Iraq are being conveniently overlooked for the issues that the US really cares about (access to oil, throwing its weight about, behaving as the unelected policeman of the world etc.) Your régime sucks up to régimes like the Saudi theocracy - if you really cared about freedom you'd be targetting the Saudi royal family as quickly as you targetted Saddam. But no, their importance as an oil producer means you actually don't care if unelected thugs make women live lives of misery under their veils with few choices and the threat of beheading should they dare to drive a car or express their, shock horror, sexuality.

Many United Statesians will have no idea why this journalist was angered enough to throw a shoe at Bush, because their limited powers of analysis can't let them see beyond the most simplistic good versus evil arguments. You wouldn't waste time trying to deconstruct the complex reasons that led up to this incident - Faux News and CNN Lies can give you the potted "analysis" that suits you best in just two minutes, and then you can ignore the violation of women's human rights because hurry up, American Idol will be on in a minute

So he's been freed? Last I heard, he is not. Also, Iraqi TV is reporting multiple injuries. Apparently half the Iraqi population is pissed at the man not because he threw a shoe at Bush, but moreso, because it was in the presence of the Iraqi President.
