Obama Commutes Bulk of Chelsea Manning’s Sentence

I'm an Obama supporter. But on this one, I strongly disagree with him.

Fortunately the President has done an otherwise great job of crushing 'whistleblowers' and the one thing I think we can say about President Trump is that he'll be just as harsh. So while this is a disappointing outcome, the wider policy shift seems to be concretely in place. A definite shift from the winds of thought in the late 1980's and 1990's.

This is going to piss you off (and that is what makes it so awesome):

That would be double jeopardy no?

Yes, unless there was a charge they failed to bring before the court before, and there would need to be evidence leading to a separate harm than what he was convicted of the first time.

Thanks to Obama, the President can without due process have a US citizen killed (presumably only overseas). Manning should stay in the US.

Yep. Obama has given Trump a dictator's toolkit. Thanks, Obama!

Treason is treason. Excuse it and deflect all you wish. I won't.

This is one issue where party loyalties disappear as much as any.

The Amash/Paul coalition in the GOP is against the NeoCons .

Nah, not really. It's just the kind of stuff children post because they think its cool. It's like wearing an anti-flag shirt, lol. Doesn't really bother me.

Please explain to me how revealing the crimes of government to the public is treason. Right off, that does not comply with the definition contained in Article III Section 3 of the US Constitution.

I won't hold my breath troop.

Double jeopardy. Due process. Equal protection. Cruel and unusual punishment.

Can't be done.

We should have hung the bastard in the first place.

It would have to be totally unrelated to the charges he was convicted for in order to pass double jeopardy. That seems unlikely. There also isn't another sovereign in this case as there are no state offenses he could be charged with.

I'd like to see the case given to a very creative US Attorney.

Fantastic news! 7 years, much of which was in solitary, is more than enough for this specific case.

Sure it does, otherwise you wouldn't have replied. At least I have the balls to admit how bothersome I find your political ideologies.

Too bad he cant. Not even Donald "lock her up" Trump does not have that power.

"“The Constitution provides that the President "shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment."

The power thus conferred is unlimited, with the exception stated. It extends to every offence known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken, or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment. This power of the President is not subject to legislative control. Congress can neither limit the effect of his pardon, nor exclude from its exercise any class of offenders. The benign prerogative of mercy reposed in him cannot be fettered by any legislative restrictions." https://scholar.google.com/scholar_...7&q=Murphy+v.+Ford&hl=en&as_sdt=6,48&as_vis=1

I'd be looking for a new, unrelated charge.

Manning better become passable real soon, because his life is going to be pretty short if the right people recognize him.

I don't know what your political philosophies are. They've changed dramatically since the primary and now seem pretty incoherent. I more or less assume you're still discovering for yourself, which is ok and admirable. So no, it really doesn't bother me.

Yet you keep replying. You hate the fact that your ideologies revolve around a sense of self-immolation, so you cling to tyrant governments and imperialistic nation-state terrorist organizations and adamantly promote the death of innocents to further your radicalism and inflate a false sense of self-importance by living vicariously through said terror organizations.

Parse this all you wish. Providing aid to our enemies by revealing top secret material is by it's very definition - Treason.
18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

We are a country of laws, not of men and their whimsically changing opinions.

EDIT: Here, so you'll see the above as well.
