A Navy destroyer opened fire Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz after four Iranian patrol boats behaved in a way that a U.S. defense official described as “harassing.”

The USS Mahan, a guided-missile destroyer, fired three warning shots at four Iranian boats after at least one of them traveled within 900 yards of the Mahan. It was traveling north through the strait toward the Persian Gulf with two other Navy vessels, the amphibious craft USS Makin Island and the oiler USNS Walter S. Diehl, a U.S. defense official said.

The Iranian boats “broke away after the warning shots were fired,” and they established contact with the Mahan by radio by asking for its course and speed, a U.S. defense official said.

Having a good relationship with Iran is a good thing, not a bad thing. Only 'stupid' people, or fools, would think that it is bad, We have enough problems around the world without yet another one.

I do not think it is possible to have a 'good' relationship with a country which hangs 13 year old girls with learning difficulties should they be accused of blasphemy. That happened in Iran a couple of years ago in Iran, under their extant evil Islamist regime, and should never be forgotten, still less forgiven.

It is only possible to have a 'good' relationship with a state in which one has a certain measure of trust. Only fools would place any trust at all in the foul theocracy that is Iran.

Yes, that's about a half mile away. WAY too close. Maybe if we sink one or two of those idiots and arresting their crew after firing some warning shots when they're over a mile away, they may get the message. That regime only understands and respects strength. We should show some.

Do we get that relationship by changing our behavior or demanding that they change theirs?? If Iran is a "bad guy", then do we acquiesce to their actions or do we stand up and tell them that they need to change and if they don't we will prevent them from causing harm to us, our allies and those people who can't defend themselves??? Which path to this good relationship should we be taking?

Thank you. 'Warmonger' was what the Appeasers called Churchill when, in the 1930s, he warned of the dangers posed by the rise of Hitler. I am honoured beyond more than I deserve.

If I remember correctly, that's what prompted Obama to open negotiations with Iran since they hold the same Islamic views he does.

I think the true warmongers are the people who would kowtow to evil regimes. Weakness toward them invites aggression. The best way to keep the peace is through maintaining a military second to none, and demonstrating a willingness to use it if necessary. Even the jihadist mutts who rule Iran understand superior force, and mind their manners when faced with the credible threat of being on the receiving end of it.
