Dead at 96.
No, he didn't choke to death. :^)
A seemingly simple, but wonderful and invaluable invention that has saved countless people worldwide.
I think most people know someone whose either used, or been saved by it.

CINCINNATI—The surgeon who created the lifesaving Heimlich maneuver for choking victims died here early on Saturday. Dr. Henry Heimlich was 96.

His son, Phil, said he died at Christ Hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

“My father was a great man who saved many lives,” Phil Heimlich, an attorney and former Hamilton County commissioner, said. “He will be missed not only by his family but by all of humanity.”

Henry Heimlich was director of surgery at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati in 1974 when he devised the treatment for choking victims that made his name a household word.

Rescuers using the procedure abruptly squeeze a victim’s abdomen, pushing in and above the navel with the fist to create a flow of air from the lungs. That flow of air then can push objects out of the windpipe and prevent suffocation.

The Wilmington, Del., native also came up with other innovations, such as a chest drain valve credited by some with saving soldiers and civilians during the Vietnam War."..."

I used the principles on myself...

(The actual maneuver would be hard to orchestrate, but a sudden all-out pressure build up in the lungs can still happen)

He was a good man, well liked in Cincinnati. His son, Phil, was a local politician. Only met Dr. Heimlich once but know his son. He was considered one of Cincinnati's two top doctors-the other being Dr. John Tew who was the leading Neurosurgeon in the area and maybe the country.

RIP - He saved thousands if not 10's of thousands with his Heimlich maneuver.

He himself used the technique only once. About a year ago in the nursing home he lived in, he used it on a fellow patient.
