The US justice department has opened an investigation into the jail in Virginia where, the Guardian revealed, a young black man with mental health problems had died after spending months detained for stealing snacks worth $5.
Federal officials are investigating whether the civil rights of inmates are being violated at Hampton Roads regional jail in Portsmouth, where 24-year-old Jamycheal Mitchell was found dead in his cell last year.

Mitchell died of heart problems and a wasting disorder in August last year, after a judge’s order that he should be committed to a mental health hospital was mislaid by a state official and forgotten about. Relatives said he suffered from schizophrenia and other psychotic problems.

He had been arrested by Portsmouth police more than three months earlier, for the alleged theft from a 7-Eleven store of a bottle of Mountain Dew, a Snickers bar and a Zebra Cake that were worth a total of $5. Mitchell’s family has sued authorities for $60m.

I seriously hope justice is done in this case. The prison industrial complex in this country is in need of serious reform and this is just another example to why its in need of reform.

This has more to do with the laws regarding "custody". When you arrest someone, you and the system have responsibilities which appear to be grossly violated here.

So there is a buttload of laws to enforce that weren't. Head will roll.

How about focusing on THIS instance instead of attacking the whole complex? Sounds a whole lot like BLM ****.

Until this country is willing to go to virtual war over this kind of malfeasance, it will be forever thus. Incompetence, in this instance, is a crime that should be punished. Lack of double-check redundancy, in this instance, should be a crime. It is the only way to send a message to the next idiot.

"Oops," should NOT be a defense.

There was a supreme court justice who said a long time ago, something like "I would rather come down with a major life threatening illness than be caught up in the American justice system." Unfortunately for all too many, the two are effectively one and the same.

You got my "like" for the first sentence. The bolded above is pure hype - blame all for the actions of a tiny few at best. Someone is responsible for ignoring that judge's order - but not everyone.

Sorry Maggie. This is a bigger problem than just one instance. Deaths in custody have been on the increase.
"For the third consecutive year, the number of inmates who died while in the custody of local jails or state prisons increased. A total of 4,446 inmates died in 2013, an increase of 131 deaths since 2012"
https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/mljsp0013st.pdf

"In 2011, (the latest available numbers) 885 inmates died (pdf) in the custody of local jails, the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics reported. Notice I said jails. These are different from prisons. Prisons are for people who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/27/deaths-in-jails-885-inmates

"The number of inmates who died in state prisons and local jails has risen for the third consecutive year, fueled in part by an increase in unnatural deaths, including suicide, drug or alcohol intoxication, accident and homicide, the Bureau of Justice Statistics announced Tuesday." Inmate deaths increased for third consecutive year | MSNBC

"A new report on mortality in jails and state prisons released today from the Department of Justice shows that in 2013, the most recent year numbers are available, 967 people died while in jail. The majority of jail deaths occurred within the first seven days a person was in police custody." Report: Rise in jail deaths despite decrease in jail population | PBS NewsHour

were still waiting for u to tell us why race was a factor. the story u posted doesnt mention it.
No one said race was a factor. That was something you got stuck in your head now you're stuck on it like a broken record machine.

Of course the incident must be investigated and treated as harshly as the law allows.

I'm not sure about the other. Which money do you want to use on it and what is the cost benefit in the investment?

Was he not a black male? Is something wrong about stating factual information?

"Oops," should NOT be a defense.

That is because the reporting is usually such as to undermine UU legitimacy in one way or another. The incidents are chosen that way.

i asked what the significance of the race is. u refused to include the age, where hes from, how tall he is, but u put in his race?

reaks of race baiting bigotry

were still waiting for u to tell us why race was a factor. the story u posted doesnt mention it.

It is a (forum?) thread rule to use the OP link title - no (other) mention of race was in the OP. Stop beating a dead horse. ;)

Sounds like some folk need to be fired and possibly thrown into jail themselves.

Unfortunately, neither is likely - in public service land the result of a "system failure" is more likely to be a request for more money to improve the system and to add more training of staff, after which they all get raises.

Unfortunately, neither is likely

That is, unfortunately, quite true. And until there's accountability in the system, ain't no one going to give a ****.

Plenty of folks give a ****, but they lack any power to force the government to even fire incompetent moron public employees much less to charge them with a crime in its "just us" system.

what does the race have to do with this

It appears that we have yet another case of bureaucratic inefficiency.

From the source:

Mitchell died of heart problems and a wasting disorder in August last year, after a judge’s order that he should be committed to a mental health hospital was mislaid by a state official and forgotten about. Relatives said he suffered from schizophrenia and other psychotic problems

This is what happens bureaucrats are constantly held unaccountable for their mistakes.

so why is it the title of ur thread lists the victims race?

Probably because it wouldn't have been accurate if he'd said an asian man died, now would it?

why was it so important u had to put it in ur title?

Why are you so invested in demanding that he not accurately describe the person?

so why is it the title of ur thread lists the victims race? why was it so important u had to put it in ur title?

"U" and "ur" are not words. Hope that helps..
