'SALEM, Ore. -- For the first time, seaborne radiation from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster has been detected on the West Coast of the United States.

Cesium-134, the so-called fingerprint of Fukushima, was measured in seawater samples taken from Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach in Oregon, according to researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Because of its short half-life, cesium-134 can only have come from Fukushima.

For the first time, cesium-134 has also been detected in a Canadian salmon, according to the Fukushima InFORM project, led by University of Victoria chemical oceanographer Jay Cullen.

In both cases, levels are extremely low, the researchers said, and don’t pose a danger to humans or the environment.

Massive amounts of contaminated water were released from the crippled nuclear plant following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. More radiation was released to the air, then fell to the sea.'

I am waiting for a three eyed fish to appear.

And if one does - they will call him 'Blinky'.

The radiation is "low level" at this time, but the leak is ongoing with no solution in sight. Just thousands of tons of molten core to be managed while it is deteriorating the containment structures. All because the World's leading nuclear engineers ignored the relevance of the huge stone tsunami markers at Fukushima marking the high tide of a previous tsunami. The negligience is ignored by the Mainstream Media that never slants the news to degrees that might be regarded as Fake News. I must be a cynic. Fake News and negligience seem criminal but normal in the USA. Energy Corporations are power and Fake News is power and it must just be a big coinky dink, eh? Fake News led by NYTimes, WashPost and the LATimes. Gosh, who'd a thunk it?

LOL first thought that came to my mind was the fish dinner scene in the Simpsons.

People keep telling me to eat fish. It's more healthy than beef they say. I think I will avoid the mercury and radiation and stick with my rib eyes and roasts. If I didn't catch it I ain't gonna eat it.

LOL...that's the fish I was referring to...Mr. Burns called him 'Blinky'.

I still cant get over that the Japanese did this, both because they once had a rep for having their **** together and also because while they have never had a problem polluting anyplace they went keeping the Island clean has almost been a fetish.

EDIT: Also the cleanup is pathetic, this should be a major outrage on the global scene, Threats of a UN takeover of the site...that level of outrage. Even now they dont know where the cores are, they are guessing.

This is UNACCEPTABLE.

We humans have thoroughly polluted Mother Earth. :(

Take a boat to this "polluted" water. Jump into the water.

Your radiation exposure will decrease.

This happened in Japan for multiple reasons. The stigma associated with Nuclear power if very large, and the public has an extremely low tolerance for anything to do with it. The public had mile's long protests at Yokosuka when the Japanese finally agreed to allow the United States Navy to station a CVN in Japan so they could retire the previous CV. There are all sorts of fun regulations that came with that permission as well.

This issue with the people of Japan and nuclear power is so bad, that funding and regulations for the plants are often obtuse and shady. Reaction to minor issues, if reported, would be a major outcry, and it lead to a culture of deceit and shadows as the nuclear plants and agencies monitoring them were involved in doing anything they could to keep out of public scrutiny, as the public scrutiny was regarded as being irrational and difficult to deal with. You see the same thing at home... sometimes peoples responses are so irrational and full of baseless outrage, that people will avoid the fight, because they can't resolve things with an adult conversation... you see it more and more of late in the US with all the echoes from the last election.

There was an amazing lack of casualty planning as well. The emergency response at the second plant to restore power to all the generators to keep the plant stable was adequate, and the head of the second plant, that prevented his from melting down, is in charge of containment and clean up at the plant that failed... but it's such a huge mess.

The whole thing is pretty tragic.

Yes. It is low level.

I wasn't kidding when I said if you jump into this water you will lower your radiation exposure. (because now much of your body is shielded from the sun by this "radioactive" water)

The Bq/m3 from naturally-occuring potassium-40 in the ocean is around 12,000.

This detection of cesium was 0.3 Bq/m3.

There is a solution to all this radiation leaking....and of course carbon pollution. Shutdown all those uranium fueled plants and build thousands of Thorium Molten Salt Reactors.

Next.

I remember reading somewhere of a neighborhood in China where all of the buildings were painted with a paint that was contaminated with radioactive cobalt (?). A study was done to find the detrimental effects of the latent radiation in the neighborhood and the results showed that cancer rates were noticeably lower among residents of the contaminated homes.

Maybe they can start selling vacations in Oregon based on the medicinal qualities of the ocean water there. ;)
