Construction of Dakota Access Pipeline to be re-routed - CNNPolitics.com

The Army will not approve an easement that would allow the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota, the Army's assistant secretary for civil works announced Sunday.

Jo-Ellen Darcy said in a press release she based her decision on a need to explore alternate routes for the Dakota Access Pipeline crossing. It was announced on November 14, 2016 that her office was delaying the decision on the easement to allow for discussions with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, whose reservation lies 0.5 miles south of the proposed crossing.

Too early to tell what all the details are, but this appears to be a victory for the standing rock protestors. I have to admit to being entirely shocked.

This disappoints me, I'd give them no time of day due to things being approved, paid for, and the claims of these Natives being bogus riding on the emotions of others. Hopefully it can still be constructed in a timely manner. I'd love to see if they can sue the Standing Rock tribe for damages and reroute costs.

Wasn't the pipeline supposed to go underneath their land, though?

No. It was just near the reservation. It wasn't in their land.

Here's a map of the proposed route.

what do you care if it gets rerouted?

So our government gives into hysterical protesters. Next you know, Clinton will become President.

Why do you hate them? after all they are not immigrants.

shame on you.

they are not hysterical, they are americans. who are you to say, pilgrim?

I see you have no idea what you are talking about! It also looks like you don't know how to capitalize a sentence.

A couple thousand veterans were in the process of arriving to stand in solidarity with the Native Americans. I'm guessing the optics of shooting veterans with water canons and tear gas grenades wasn't optimal.

The implications that upset Natives with baseless accusations can costs businesses time and money because of feelings. I don't want a precedence to be set.

I never said I hate them...

It's about more than just the reservation itself, but the principles behind fossil fuel economy. It's also to do with the social and ecological impacts, the ethics of carving up land looking for diminishing resources, and of violently pitting governments against the very people they are supposed to protect by excessively catering to business firms.

Shocked by the outcome and very happy it ended this way. Hopefully it's not merely a rouse to get people to leave.

I'm opposed to the pipeline being completed at all, however the manner and style in which these people opposed it is something I find disagreeable. The protest was more about attention whoring. These people had a chance to voice their concerns during the official comments phase and chose to say nothing at all about it.

Two reservations are on the banks of that lake and take water out of it. The lake that the pipeline was going to cross, I mean.
How's your drinking water supply? Pretty secure?

This sort of thing always makes me think of
“There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now. … What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for heaven’s sake, mankind, it’s only four light years away, you know. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that’s your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams.”

They did not. Their opposition goes back before the permits were let.
They get drinking water out of that lake. Of course they oppose the pipeline crossing it. What would you do? Lay down, roll over and submit?
