Like the article said there is an additional hurdle to jump.

10 U.S. Code § 113 - Secretary of Defense

(a) There is a Secretary of Defense, who is the head of the Department of Defense, appointed from civilian life by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. A person may not be appointed as Secretary of Defense within seven years after relief from active duty as a commissioned officer of a regular component of an armed force.

I think I'm fine with this. A little hesitant about the waiver he'll need, but he's been out long enough I don't think there's a conflict.

A little interesting he picked him with Mattis' views on a two state solution and arming Syrian Rebels.

SO glad that a journalist at WaPo is more on the ball about these restrictions than the transition team. That's quality vetting right there.

It was dropped from 10 years to 7 years as recently as 2008. It is an arbitrary number with no real merit so I don't have a problem with the waiver.

I cannot imagine a world where a GOP led Congress doesn't give one of our most admired and credentialed Generals a waiver to serve in what is effectively a wartime position.

It wouldn't surprise me.

I forsee that being less of a hurdle than Mattis finding parking at the Pentagon.*

*He will have a designated spot, and probably a driver. Still more of a hurdle than getting the Senate to pass him, waiver and all.

Ooh Rah!!!

Awesome!

Now John Bolton to drain the State Dept. Swamp.
Or Rudy.

General Mattis is pretty much a neoconservative and an avowed believer in both liberal internationalism and American Empire. I adore him. Now match him with Romney, Giuliani, or Bolten in the State Department... heh, well that's called "we're back" baby. As long as Trump delegates as much as he's apparently indicated he would.

Anyone who wanted Festung Amerikana or to pull back from NATO or our Middle Eastern commitments should be furious at the Mattis pick. I'm not. ;)

My guess is it's about 1mm high.

There's precedent... and...

Mattis is a stud.

GOD DAMN but he has is work cut out for him.

Obama left the pentagon a wreck.

Well, I suppose the American notion of never-ending war ain't going away anytime soon.

To be fair that concept wouldnt have changed if Hillary was elected instead.

There is a letter making its rounds from General Mattis to a fellow officer on the subject of "Too busy to Read" that gives great insight into the man as an officer and a leader. This guy is the real deal. In my line of work I deal with a lot of officers in the "too busy to read" category who think spit-balling is the mark of a good leader, but it isn't. Know your history and you know what's coming next.

Yaaaaay more unfunded wars to come. I thought Clinton was the warhawk?

This will not be an issue.
There is nothing holding the senate back from issuing a waiver.

Trumps transition team so far has picked a great deal of good people to put into positions.

Jeff Sessions as AG. finally an AG that will put honor back in the position after the disaster
of the previous 8 years. sorry but holder and lynch make jeno look like a genius of a pick.

Tom Price as HHS: another qualified pick.

Betsy DeVos department of education: I don't know much about her but what little I do know she will
hopefully clean up that department and get our education system back on track.

Nikki Haley Amb. to UN: another great qualified pick and a great person.

Elaine Chao Transportation sec. : worked for bush in as labor secretary so has experience.

Mnuchin Sec. of Treasury: another good pick. is an outsider for sure but ran the trump finance team like a well oiled machine.

Wilbur ROss Sec. of Commerce: another outsider and a capital venture person. is with trump on free trade agreements.
has a hang up over a mine decision that went wrong, but should be confirmed.

A former marine officer to hold a military position?! This is horrible, another right wing conspiracy. I hope Putin the Prince of Peace is not offended. Maybe water boarding will be ended once and for all so we can get on with gasoline boarding.

We are fighting a religion that believes in that. I guess were lucky it worked out that way.

Well...I like his stance (at least what I read in Wikipedia) on Israel/Palestinians.

Pretty much everything else I am not so sure about.

But at least that is something.
