Donald Trump signals he will end US support for Syrian rebels - BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his campaign trail position that assisting the Syrian government in fighting Isis should be the US’ main objective in Syria, despite appeals from rebels for continued help in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad.

“I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria. My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting Isis, and you have to get rid of Isis,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Mr Trump has stated that while he “did not like [Mr Assad] at all”, shoring up his regime is the best way to stem the extremism that has flourished in the chaos of the civil war and threatens the US.

He has also been emphatic about mending ties with Russia, Syria’s long-standing ally and military backer in the conflict.

Other rebels on the ground were less enthusiastic, predicting more bloodshed no matter what Mr Trump’s policy ultimately ends up being on the war which has killed more than 400,000 people to date and driven half the Syrian population from their homes.

“The Americans were never honest with us. They left us in a quagmire that drowned the Syrians... Everyone is trading with our blood and suffering,” said Abu Hamed, head of the military council of rebel group Liwa al Haq Brigade, speaking from Hama.

Those rebels have cut ISIL off from their access to the border (a strategic requirement), and are currently advancing on Raqqa (ISIL's capital), but hey, Facts Schmacts!!!!

"DESPITE THEIR PLEAS"? For ****s sake! From best to worst they are: Islamic Fundamentalists, terrorists, and some of them are literally al-Qaeda affiliates.

You know what I find more ridiculous? The MSM spin on this. The "despite their pleas" line. The MSM has reached bottom of the barrel status and then borrowed a hole into the Earths crust to sink into new depths of spin and propaganda. Yet another example of how the MSM has learned absolutely nothing from this election.

Donald Trump, who criticized Obama for pulling out of Iraq when we were winning, now promises to do the same in Syria.

Huzzah.
 
No matter how the mess in Syria turns out Syria will not be a reliable ally of the USA.
 
Without US support for a side we lose out on a seat at the table if "our side" wins. Maybe that would have worked, maybe the rebels would have just been another Mujahadeen. We'll never know now.
 
we are long past being able to shape events in Syria..It's a Russian client state -so be it

WTF?? Who in God's name wanted Syria as an ally? We have no strategic interests in the region other than to stop ISIS.

Trump won't build a wall, although the wall idea was passed years ago. More likely he might it less desirable for illegals to be here, and they well self deport.
