Elementary school cancels mock election after kids chant ‘Trump’

There was nothign teachable here from a teacher/school standpoint.

Are you aware that there are in our schools "anti-bulling experts" who have as their major job teaching conflict resolution?

This was absolutely a squandered opportunity.

What positive "teachable moment" can come out of "Hey Marieles --- if Donald Trump wins the election, he's sending you back to Mexico!!!"?

or what happens when the kid flat out asks you is right that they want to kick muslims or mexicans out of the country and you say no. The kid who was saying kick them out goes home tells their parent and now the parent is pissed and claims you taught their kid to support hillary or some other nonsense? Because people like you and others who have worked with youths and in the school system understand thats what would have happened. Logically the best move was shutting this down.

Also, the other day I heard two kids in my class talking and one said, "How can you like Trump? He hates women! He hates [my name]! How can you like someone who hates her??"

It would not have ended well because the adults and the education system we run have failed.

We should probably do something about that.

Different issue

Meaningless to the topic of this not working out well and the best move being to shut it down.

They didn't shut it down where I went to school, and we were all completely fine with it.

But I was in middle school at the time, so we were more mature than elementary school kids (most of us, anyway).

No no no, sorry. I dont mean shut down these "activities" in general and never allow them again. Im talking about this specific case with elementary kids and where racist rhetoric was already starting. Thats a no win. I mean I can invent a scenario that could be a win and a teachable moment but its fantasy and id bet the farm, the tractor and auntie em that it doesn't go that way in the real world. :)

A teachable moment, squandered by the queasy none too bright elders, that is what this was.

Hawkeye?

Okay, then. I apologize for the misinterpretation. I pretty much agree with you.

There are so many ways to go with that one but I think i would choose "Under the Constitution the Congress controls the money, and since deporting all illegals would cost a great deal of money that could only happen if Congress spent that great deal of money to do it, which they have made clear they will not do, so you are stuck with Marieles. I suggest you two try to get along".

That assumes that Marieles is an illegal alien.

Only because you are assuming failure, which is the way we tend to roll for sure but at some point we need to make a stab at better.

No sorries needed, I may have not have been clear enough, all good!

Exactly, and if he/she is not then we have an even better lesson about assuming.

THere are so many ways to go, so many lessons that need teaching, at some point we need to step up and teach them.

Im not assuming anything, Im simply going by reality.

That point would be when their brains are developed enough to understand --- not elementary school.

Middle school would be the best place to start, IMO. That's when I started getting invested into politics.

We have tons of science that shows that kids are a lot smarter and more resilient than we think they are....this idea that kids are dumb or too fragile to handle the truth is one of the bigger drivers of our crap education and crap parenting.

When I was in school (60's/70's) this sort of thing was mastered by the end of 3rd grade.

We cant manage that anymore.

We have a ton of science that shows that we shouldn't be pushing children to learn things their brains aren't ready for. Don't attempt to debate me on this, Hawkeye. You'll lose.

Oh that's true, the question is where is the line for what they are ready for.

Oh, and threats dont work on me.
