Elementary school cancels mock election after kids chant ‘Trump’

The Weekly Reader national compilation of classroom mock presidential elections used to be a freakishly accurate indicator of who would win the Presidency. They either stopped doing the poll or quit publishing the 3rd grade Weekly Reader. I forget which it was. The belief was that the kids picked who their parents said they were voting for, or at least emulated who their parents thought was good and who their parents thought were bad.

There is no mention of negative chants, only negative words, which of course are not allowed in Utopia....

No, we should definitely encourage 5th graders to use negative rhetoric about minorities. Now THAT would be Utopia. Right?

I remember at my middle school they had a mock election for the 2012 season. At my school Romney won, but in the school district overall Obama won.

But more to the point, they should have seen that coming a mile away. When it comes to pretty much anything in the realm of politics, aguments are bound to happen.

Did the kids who voted for Romney use negative rhetoric about minorities?

That movie wasn't supposed to be accurate, dammit! The fact the government is passing laws dicating how people are supposed to address each other is getting way too close to that scene then I would like.

We should encourage them to attempt to grasp and speak truth. Dont forget that I am Zen, to me all this negative/positive stuff in this dying civilization has for the most part devolved into being nothing but the emotion driven weak ignorant mind allowed fad of the day....it is not important enough to make decisions based upon.

Edit: life is messy, and often we are in conflict with others, youth need to learn that this is the truth and they need to learn how to deal with it. There elders have failed them.

School officials decided to cancel the mock election to prevent minority students “from feeling uncomfortable,” according to Glen Rogers, the school’s principal.
“Teachers have said they’ve heard some kids in the cafeteria chanting ‘Trump! Trump! Trump!’ or saying they don’t want Muslims here,” Mr. Rogers told ABC News.
“I mean, kids often repeat what they hear on the TV or the news, but it doesn’t mean it’s OK,” he said. “We have a diverse community here. We want all our students to feel valued.”

Good move by the school in this really no win situation. Theres really no way for that to play out good lol

Negative rhetoric against minorities is the truth?

Could be, I would need to know the idea being spoken to know yes or no.

We dont care about ideas because we be some stupid mother****ers, it is tone of voice we care about.

Yeah, with kids shouting "Trump!", Hillary was going down the toilet. Better to pull the plug.

.

Ah, so you want to live someplace where negative rhetoric against minorities is okay. Got it.

Why is it completely off limits? Couldn't some negative rhetoric be based on truth?

Yeah, Hillary was going down in flames. Better to pull the plug.

???What LMAO
it has nothing to do with either crappy candidate, it has to deal with the no win situation of dealing with elementary school kids and dealing with the mix of civility, trying to stay impartial and trying to use it as a teaching moment that would have probably never worked out well. Shutting it down was a good move to have the least conflict with kids, parents etc

If that is what people think I sure do, I want to hear the truth not some pretty lie, especially a lie told on orders from those who claim to be my betters.

But then I am the free speech, free mind guy.

I'm not surprised. I can't even mention the election in my classroom without someone telling another student that Trump is going to kick them out of America. These aren't things that need to be talked about at school - especially with young children who really don't understand politics. It is causing a lot of questions, anxiety and hurt feelings. I won't have it in my classroom.

Common sense at its finest, you can tell, like myself you have actually dealt with youths, the school system and parents . . . . this was not going to end well and there was no real teaching moment here

A teachable moment, squandered by the queasy none too bright elders, that is what this was.

Negative rhetoric against minorities is the truth?

No, minorities are perfect. We all know that. Whatever problems they've experienced are the result of systemic racism. ;)

What positive "teachable moment" can come out of "Hey Marieles --- if Donald Trump wins the election, he's sending you back to Mexico!!!"?

It is sad that America has become so politically polarized that even our elementary schools are being affected. It is one thing to believe A. It is another to want to fight because someone believes B. And it is far beyond my comprehension that people will bring their young children into those fights.

There was nothign teachable here from a teacher/school standpoint.

It would not have ended well because the adults and the education system we run have failed.

We should probably do something about that.
