Chatter grows that Ryan could step down | TheHill

Four House Republicans, including a senior lawmaker close to leadership, told The Hill they expect Ryan to step down after Tuesday’s elections, arguing that he faces a daunting path to the 218 votes he needs to win a full two-year term leading the House GOP.

Aides to the Wisconsin Republican insist he isn’t going anywhere and that he’s completely focused right now on protecting the GOP’s majority in the lower chamber.

But even some Ryan allies are conceding that the Speaker now finds himself in an untenable position after just a year on the job.

It’s not just the usual Freedom Caucus members who are pushing for change at the top; some more mainstream Republicans from safe GOP districts could pull their support over Ryan’s handling of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, lawmakers said.

The brash New York real estate mogul is enormously popular in many of these districts, but Ryan stopped actively supporting Trump after a recording surfaced of him talking in 2005 about groping and kissing women.
If true the dysfunction continues.

Well. That would screw us all into quite a mess. I can't think of anyone else with the national profile to take over the post, and the institutional background to make it work well.

Ryan always wanted to head up Ways and Means anyway. He'd likely be a lot happier (and his family would, too).

I was a Tea Party supporter, excited about actually reinvigorating conservatism into the Party. But Ryan and reforming entitlements and the welfare state are a huge part of that. If the so-called "conservatives" in the House want to throw a hissy fit, they've only demonstrated themselves unworthy of their posts.

I am all for Paul Ryan stepping down.

First, I want him to climb to the top of a very tall building.
Then, I want him to step onto the ledge, and take a firm hold of Hillary Clinton's hand on one side, and Donald Trump's on the other.

And then I want him to take that very long step down, dragging both of those turds with him all the way to the concrete below.

:)

I'll believe it when I see it.

Ryan has his work cut out for him, but I believe he will give it a fair shake and attempt to do what is best for the party.

Considering that the party is angry and will go thru an internal revolution, heads will be on pikes.

A new party may be the result. That has been the usual path for center-right evolution.

The Dems are headed that way with center left. Reason Bernie came out of no where. Imagine if the Dems had a decent choice besides the HRC anointment.
Both parties candidates are sickening, disgusting, crooked POS.

The Dems just shed their old principles and grow new ones.

Paul Ryan is one of the few sane Republicans left in the spotlight. The only reason he stays is because he has nowhere else to go.

But I can't imagine he'll be able to withstand the cognitive dissonance inherent in his position for very much longer... without being worn down into a nub.

If I remember correctly he didn't want the job in the first place. Didn't the GOP have to beg him to take it?

I think that his hesitation would come from the Freedom Caucus, rather than 1) being Speaker of the House 2) Shaping the policy direction of the House of Representatives and the GOP. The former is great in of itself, but Ryan sees himself as the big ideas man for the GOP, with much justification.

Cant say ive been impressed with hos leadership. Overall he has been somewhat weak but he has not been a complete disaster. Im all for replacing him with someone better.
