Killer sought via text message broadcast - BBC News

The phones have been identified as being in use on 16 December close to the route Mr Hatch travelled on the night he was killed.
About 7,500 people are expected to receive the messages asking them to contact police.
[snip]
The messages will also direct people to a website to answer a few questions that the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said would help its officers.
[snip]
Ontario police have used the mass-messaging technique, known as a tower dump, before now, but its use was challenged in Canadian courts after one local force applied to use it to contact more than 100,000 people.

The next step: Big Brother will seek out those who don't respond to their web questionnaire as 'persons of interest'.

That's annoying. I'm still annoyed by that stupid amber alert nonsense. Stop bothering me, government. I'm not your ****ing agent and if I am then why in the **** am I not getting paid for it?

As a member of a community I don't think it is too much to ask that you be on the lookout when a child is abducted.

This is more than just an amber alert. This is a targeted message based on intel requesting the recipient fill out a web questionnaire.

Essentially, this is the first step to being electronically detained and questioned.

I'm not being paid to do police work. If the government wants me to do it then I expect to be paid for it.

I also don't appreciate getting messages from the state. They can leave me the hell alone.

Your concerns are valid. I see both sides of this argument.

Why the HELL is the state able to access my phone and send messages on behalf of the state????

But....

I'd want someone to BOLO for my child if it were abducted

I don't agree with that at all. Noone is asking for you to be a cop, just a decent person. A child's life is at stake but you can't be bothered with a small, brief noise to save a life. That is incredibly selfish.

The state allows your cell phone to work in their state.

Speaking solely for the iphone, there is a "Screw other people, I only care about me" feature whereby you can turn off the amber alerts.

I know, but still.

Is it safe to assume that you wouldnt want the state to notify you via text messaging that an earthquake is about to strike (or Tornado)?

look up earthquake early warning

This is nothing more than conservatives/libertarians displaying their anti-social tenancies.

Just let me barricade myself in bunker with my guns, food, and gold. *uck everyone else :2razz:

I don't need a nanny telling me of bad things. I can find that out on my own, thank you.

Oh, I have no doubt of that. Based on your position in this thread I'm sure you're beating the police to every kidnapping case because you're regularly finding out about them on your own first. Why, I'll bet you've single handedly put the local law enforcement out of business.

Too bad. We've decided this is important and so we will continue to send out these messages. I know in your libertarian fantasy world this is tantamount to slavery but we're confident you'll survive.

As the knower of all things I know there is no money in it.

That's fine. If you wish to pay someone to do a job and then go out and pick up a shovel yourself, I see no reason to stop you.

This is terrible news.

1 - The police got a list of everyone who's phone passed through the area.

2 - Now they want everyone on the list to be interviewed (sic) by them.

3 - And what happens to those that don't contact them for various reasons?

Scary stuff.

Why would anybody answer those texts.

I would consider them spam and delete them.
The police are have identified your phone, and sent you a text specifically directing you to contact them concerning questions they have for you regarding a crime.

You don't see a potential problem in ignoring them? If not now, perhaps in the future?
