Tour bus crashes into big rig in Desert Hot Springs; 11 reported killed, 30 others injured - LA Times

A dozen people were killed and 30 others were injured Sunday morning when a tour bus collided with a big-rig truck on the Interstate 10 near Palm Springs, according to officials and published reports.

A California Highway Patrol official confirmed the crash but could not immediately provide more details. The CHP has scheduled a news conference for 1:30 p.m.

Nothing short of horrific.

R.I.P to all of the innocent people that lost their lives. And for the remaining 30 injured, I hope they have a swift recovery.

Re: Tour bus crashes into big rig in Desert Hot Springs; 11 reported killed, 30 other

Poet Aleman, who lives in the Coachella Valley, was driving west on I-10 around 5 a.m. when traffic came to a sudden halt. From her vantage point, she said it looked like the big rig had tried to merge into the lane the passenger bus was using.

Ya, I have in the last ten years seen a massive increase in dangerous truck driving. I suspect that the problem is all the Mexicans that NAFTA let drive truck on our roads, but if this is the case I dont trust that my government would allow that information to get out. I will be looking to see if this driver is a Mexican.

It's up to 13 now. Having seen video of the semi, it doesn't look like it was parked, but the damage to the bus is go great it indicates a very high differential in rate of speed.

SoCal freeways are very dangerous with the trucks...

The statistics do not support me, but my experience is that truck drivers have gotten much more aggressive, I dont even drive much and I have seen a lot of near misses caused by truck drivers in recent years.

Interesting fact: Just ten doors down lives a WSP officer who's entire duty is keeping an eye on truckers (super nice guy), I need to ask him about this.

Ya but this bit about truckers pulling out right in front of others forcing them to slam on the brakes, I see a lot of that on I-5 here...."I am bigger than you, I will do what ever the **** I want to do" seems to be the modus operandi.

Yep. Every time I go back the trucks are bullying cars...my kids are shocked. Driving there is a trip compared to our mellow driving here.

It did not used to be anywhere near this bad.

I am right about this.

RIGHT?

In accidents involving CMV's and private autos, the private driver is at fault 80% of the time.

80 percent of car-truck crashes caused by car drivers, ATA report says

Yeah. Right. I grew up driving the 10, 15, 405, 110, 610, 22, 5, 91, 210, 101, etc. Lots of traffic and some bad truckers over three decades but it is every time we drive coming back the last four or so years. Driving to Palm Springs through the Moreno Valley and Beaumont was terrifying last year.

How do you know the automobile driver isn't speeding? Or, what I see a lot, when the auto driver sees the truck getting ready to change lanes, the auto driver speeds up and cuts the truck off.

Wait, you see truck drivers signal a lane change BEFORE they start it??!!

Lucky you, that is so old school.

A bit rare here now.

It is often the case that I find myself driving in a clear left lane while the right is at a dead stop. I cannot count the number of times someone from the stopped right lane forces themselves over into the open left. I ride my brake nowadays whenever I am in that situation, anticipating the worst.

Doubt that was the situation at 5am in the middle of the desert.

We are talking about "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA"...

I see it all the time. I see car drivers ignore those turn signals, too. I see new levels of stupidity from car drivers everyday.

I thought the piece you quoted said traffic came to a stop and the truck moved in front of the bus?

See enough trucks turn into your lane at the bottom of a hill, and staying in it all the way to the top ending up less than 50mph, maybe you(F) do that.....I have seen it. I also see Trucks illegally driving in the left most lane to get around other slower trucks all the time, I did ask the WSP guy about this, he said that these last few years they have put a lot of effort into handing truckers tickets for this move.

I took that to mean that traffic stopped because of the crash.

I am not 100% sure on this.

Re: Tour bus crashes into big rig in Desert Hot Springs; 11 reported killed, 30 other

I drive 50,000+ miles per year in the US and have no idea what you guys are talking about. Truck drivers aren't becoming more dangerous. I'd trust a truck driver over a bus driver anyday, even a swift driver

A lot of it has to do with (according some police buddies of mine) truck drivers using electronics while driving - cell phones, computers, and even watching satellite TV while driving.

Re: Tour bus crashes into big rig in Desert Hot Springs; 11 reported killed, 30 other

I do not know the particulars about this case, but I was an over the road truck driver for four years and it always amazed me how a vehicle that is 72 feet long could become invisible to cars. I am not saying that truck drivers do not pull some selfish d-baggery on the road, but a car is much easier to maneuver than a truck. Pulling out in front of an 80,000 lb truck is not only reckless, but stupid. I know how hard it is to stop a truck, and I would never pull out in front of one intentionally. As far as a truck pulling out into traffic, sometimes it is unavoidable. A car can go 0-60 in a few seconds. I have been in truck that took up to a minute or so to get up to speed. You just have to go when there is even a shot. Like I said, I do not know all of the particulars about this case, but from what I have seen, any time there is an accident involving a semi, the truck driver is always assumed to be at fault, and I think that is unfair.

Speaking to that:
"In fatal crashes involving large trucks, 88 percent of the time the crash is attributable to driver error by both car and truck drivers. Only 12 percent of the crashes are the result of vehicle defects, road conditions or inclement weather," the website state
FHP aggressively targets aggressive drivers - News - Ocala.com - Ocala, FL

The federal stats say that Truck or Bus accidents are near an all time low, only 09/10/11 were lower as the Great Recession pulled trucks off the road. My experience has been different.
