State Department Funnels Millions To His Kid's Non-Profit Foundation

Oh, so by way of her father's current - she's worth 700-1.2 billion?

You really think Dr. Kerry is on equal inheritance footing of the Heinz estate as the children of John Heinz? Do you really think that John Kerry is going to inherit much if anything from John Kerry?

Perhaps you should acquaint yourself with the concept of a prenuptial agreement.

An incredibly important distinction. She's now worth less than whatever you're worth when her father's current wife passes away. You'd have to be absolutely insane to think that somebody successful whose father is married to somebody worth 700-1.2 billion would collude to steal 9 measly millions from the same government the family's most visible member works for.

I've accused Dr. Kerry of nothing, you must be looking for some other droids.

I wouldn't call it a scandal, but I would say that it is something that needs a closer look. The questions I'd like to see answered:
Was the program which funded this made public so that other orgs. could apply for it?
Were there any other applicants?
Was the gov't funding necessary or were there other sources for the money?
As well as what the program's administrative costs are.
So... John Kerry's daughter, worth 700 million-1.2 billion by way of her mother... colludes to steal 9 million dollars from the US taxpayer and split it with half a dozen people?
As Ali Haji stated, the fact that the fortune exists does not mean that she is in line for it.

I remember that Kerry only released his taxes during his presidential campaign, not those of his wife who files separately. Of course, filing separately does not automatically indicate that Kerry's children are not in line for the fortune, but it could be an indicator.

As a side note, I think Kerry is a Blue Blood himself, though not nearly at the same level old money wise as that of the big leaguers. Thus, Kerry's children, even if they don't have access to da' fortune, could be relatively wealthy by the standards of most Americans.

Looks like Dr Kerry recieved a " no-bid contract ", so the Bush haters should be livid, right ?

So which one of those organizations pays the student loans of doctors and nurses in exchange for working a year or two in the peace corps?

That is a good point.

It is also worth mentioning that Dr. Kerry's program delivers very concrete results. $30,000 dollars (plus administrative costs) sends a doctor to a developing nation for a year. Even still, the concept of apparently no bid contracts being arranged for the children of senior politicians is bad medicine for the nation as a whole.

That's the point...there weren't other competitors for the funding.

The Peace Corp was founded by JFK's brother in law...Sargent Shriver. It didn't seem like bad medicine for the nation back then.

Ok, I can see, and accept your point- so long as the administrative costs of the program are with in normal limits and the program continues to yield tangible, concrete results (U.S. doctors are physically present over seas).

Another point in Dr. Kerry's favor is that she is an MD and holds a public health teaching position at Harvard. So, its not like her qualifications to manage the program have been inflated or artificially created.

Now, if only she and her father did not look so, well, blue blood. Though I cant describe what blue bloods look like, I know them when I see them. Maybe its the combination of clothes and looks?

Some wealthy people feel they not only have a responsibility to use their wealth and privilege for philanthropic causes but also have a civic duty to public service and their country for the freedoms that allowed them to be wealthy.

And it isn't. I question whether $9M of tax payer money had to go to it, and whether Kerry was authorized in some fashion to direct that much of the people's money that way.

Taking from taxpayers and giving to someone else, no matter how noble the cause, really isn't public service. It's redirecting taxpayer monies, i.e. spending someone else's money.

The funding had to be approved by congress and if I recall the house budget committee was controlled by republicans...which means they approved the funding.

Very true.

Dr. Kerry seems to be one of those. She is wealthy (though to what degree is not apparent). She could have easily parlayed her name and Ivy League medical education into a lucrative private practice- or just gotten a token degree from the Ivy League with a gentlewoman's "C" , then sat on the board of a museum and spent her copious free time doing a lot of nothing.

The one inherited wealth person that I have took the "do nothing" option, except that he got his degree from an old money southern school.

And if such funding were in fact approved by congress, the House actually I think - as they hold the proverbial purse strings, they there'd be a lot less questions about it.

At this point, I've not heard anything that would lead one to believe that it was approved spending, nor that it wasn't approved spending, so still up in the air I guess.

Or it could have been purely discretionary and authorized administratively using general funds that congress had pre-approved. My guess is that this is the case because some Republicans would have yelled earlier if it went through congress.

As Secretary of State, I am guessing he had the ability to administratively authorize a 9 million dollar expenditure deemed to further the diplomatic interests of the United States.

All I've got to say is...

John Kerry was a senator and head of the Foreign Relations Committee when the program and funding was first approved...not the Secretary of State. The funding comes out of the budget for the Peace Corp.

Oops, I did not add: "have known".

Just a guy I once knew whose grandfather worked his way up from construction worker to large scale commercial construction contractor during the initial expansion of my city. His father then continued with the business. Anyways, he inherited a portion of the probably midsized family fortune in the form of a trust. After getting a degree from southern ivy, he engaged in a long, distinguished career doing, well, nothing.

I'm sorry, I get liberal and conservative droids confused regularly. For future reference, aren't you a liberal droid? I'll make sure to correct my database.

Not really, the 200 million her father has all by himself should be more than enough:

Again, why does she need to collude for 9 million dollars which she'll split with half a dozen people and is more than likely to land her father in jail if the accusations made by this rag are true?

Keep dodging the important questions.

"Kerry has been a mainstay on Roll Call's list of the wealthiest in Congress for more than 15 years, due in large part to the assets of his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry..."

I have no idea why Mr. Kerry used his discretion to aid the organization his daughter works. Do you believe that Secretaries of State consider the possibility of jail when they make their decisions?
