How Donald Trump retooled his charity to spend other people’s money

Wow... a HUGE story like this and only 3 replies? And how many threads on the Clinton Foundation? Speaks volumes, to the hypocrisy and partisanship here at DP, I think.

The last time Trump donated to the charity that bears his name was in 2007. Wow... just wow.

The partisanship at DP? LOL

We 12 conservatives do the best we can here. LOL

A little financial crisis affected the real estate business a bit ;)

Yes it did. And Trump saw the "upside" in that crash:

Until the year 2008, The Trump Foundation was pretty much above board...... Then a couple of things happened:

1) Trump stopped giving money to his charity, and began soliciting others to give money to the foundation instead. Then he handed out the money to charity, and claimed the donations as his own. Is this ethical? No, but it is legal, no matter how repulsive this practice is.

2) Trump also began using the Trump Foundation as his personal piggy bank. At one auction, Trump was the higgest bidder for an autographed football jersey and helmet. At another, he was the highest bidder for a 6 foot portrait of himself. In both cases, the money used to pay for these transactions came not from his own pocket, but from Trump Foundation funds, which consists of donors' money, not his.

There is much more in this article by David Farenthold, who has been investigatng Trump and his foundation, and what he has found is not pretty.

Of course, in posting this, I am speaking to the choir..... That choir being all those Trump supporters who will excuse anything unethical that Trump does. Now why would they do that? Because they are every bit as unethical and crooked as Trump.

Expect the Trump apologists to make excuses for this behavior, attack the source, tell us that it doesn't matter, or attempt to derail the thread by saying "But Hillary" in 3........... 2............ 1............ It's their MO, of course. They have no moral compass either. Basket of deplorables? You betcha!!

Article is here.

The Clintons' method was far more brilliant.

That doesn't tell us whether he made money or lost money, let alone imply that he was actually happy to see the crisis. Looking forward to a cycle downturn and looking forward to one of the largest financial crises of the century aren't on par with each other.

Forgive me, but how does this imply that he redirected the funds to use his charity for unethical reasons... if anything doesn't this support the argument that he redirected the funds to support his business or invest in opportunities, and not some evil ploy to use the charity by stopping his donations in 2008?

Yes, go ahead and tell that to people who got afflicted by the Great Recession.

This does:

Trump in 2007: '''I'''m Excited''' for Housing Market Crash - NBC News

Yes, go ahead and tell that to people who got afflicted by the Great Recession.

The key part of of my response was "one of the largest financial crises", not the largest financial crisis. If the Fed rate drops from over 5% to essentially 0%... I'd say it's safe to say the situation is pretty bad.

The clintons tax returns. You know, those things that trump doesn't feel his uneducated stupid supporters would be able to comprehend?

No doubt you have a source that show that's how he feels about his supporters looking at his taxes?

Interesting point, but again I don't think he was excited for a crisis. The article was published on March 20, 2007. Take a look at the financial markets, they were still climbing at the time of this statement. https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=dow jones

His references are still comparing the subprime issue to the 90s recession. The market, the Fed, etc... are still acting as if it's only a downturn.
