Occidental College to investigate vandalism of 9/11 memorial

Ofcourse it is News....It may not be news to you because you don't see anything wrong with it, and that would be sad.

Of course, you miss the point entirely.

I'm not approving of this ****ty activity. It was a crappy thing to do, but kids do stupid **** like this all the time.

Ah, the old 'kids will be kids' excuse....Well, these kids, are adults.

And their stupid. Nobody's denying that. But stupidity isn't a capital crime.

In your opinion when does somebody stop being a kid and have to take responsibility for their actions?

Don't know if it's schools per se. Certainly Public Schools in general are considerably liberal/socialist progressive in thought and action. Most likely it is the massive social media apparatus that promotes such thinking.

Occidental College is a private liberal arts college that in it's current form attracts and encourages very liberal minded students. Safe spaces, infringement on certain student groups rights, etc., have become the norm.

Full disclosure, three generations of my family graduated from Oxy.
Well, if a change of family tradition is in the cards, there's always U of C:

Chicago Tribune: U. of C. tells incoming freshmen it does not support 'trigger warnings' or 'safe spaces'

The fact that Oxy is quite active in the Social Justice/Politically Correct movement is indisputable. Trampling on something a Republican Club did would/should not be unexpected.

When I went to school, we learned about things like the American Revolution, Horace Greeley (Manifest Destiny), and the Spanish-American War. Today, kids learn about the slave-holding Founders, the Native American (We called them Indians ) Genocide, and American Imperialism, among other things. So maybe this is payback. ;)

This is shameful. If whomever did this also happens to be a student, then they should find a country that they respect and that would provide them with an education since they obviously do not respect the United States of America.

What in the hell is the matter with these kids....? Of all the disrespectful, hateful things....It is time for some real reason on our college campus'... I hope these kids get what they deserve.

Some observations:
It seems unlikely that the vandals were students at the college, more likely just local yahoos with no respect for anyone, including themselves.
Local yahoos who go around destroying property are getting more and more common all around the country.
If the college actually wrote the phrase "had crushed, snapped, and threw in the garbage every single flag," they seriously need to look at their English department.

Thanks for directing me to that....Didn't see it when I posted the OP...But, If the reprobates that did this wanted to draw attention to those Iraqis and such that died in the war, then they should have gotten permission to do so from the college, NOT desecrated the American's who died in that attack....To do it in the way they did, then post their own protest flyers it very well could be seen in negative light to the memorial.

I don't agree with vandalizing the memorial, but I don't have a problem with people posting flyers with opposing points of view.

Is this one of those hate crimes? Hard to tell the difference nowadays.

I suppose it takes quite a bit of effort to shape an appropriately subservient snowflake.

I remember reading about this a few weeks back. Good for them.

Encouraging division on a college campus is bizarre to me.

"Snowflake" is an appropriate label for those who feel the need to be protected.
It just goes to show how far we've come from the Berkely Free Speech Movement, and all the hard, grassroots, 'bottom up' work done by young people in the 60's/70's.

:(

Indeed. All that effort, to arrive at this result on college campuses across the country? WTH?

Such results do not help quiet the claims that something deeper, and I suggest, darker, is at work.

Teaching and encouraging intolerance, division, and bigotry, is a colossal leap backwards.

They should kick out any of those they determine did this. It's ridiculous. Oh, and is Kapernick going to say this is a responsible way to display your opposing opinion of our constitution?

Might have been just one a**hole. Probably was, in fact.

And which schools are teaching that students should go trample flags on a 9/11 memorial?

This one if there is not punishment for their blatant disrespect.

These young adults aren't stupid kids doing stupid things - they are spoiled entitled adults acting like children. I can see it now when one gets caught and punished. Their mom coming down to the college to cuss out the administrator for wrongly accusing their child. They fact is, liberal or not, college created or not, they are only hurting themselves. Intelligent people do not cut off the hand that feeds them and they do not spit on the country that has given them so much. You know, the ability to go to college and to be free to do what they want - be it stupid or not. I hope that one of those punks is reading this post because the truth is, they will amount to nothing. The people that will thrive and live amazing lives will be the ones that came out again and replaced those flags and stood guard. Those will be the people rewarded in life.

By the way, the people who make positive change in this world are the people like MLK who do this through Peace. These people are not about Peace at all but simply about hate. And, hate begets hate. Good luck.

Your point is that Liberal or not, colleges do not set out to teach children to trample on flags. I'll agree with that. However, just like the generation of parents who didn't set out to make their kids entitled and spoiled, indirectly did just that. Words have meaning. If an impressionable child hears from a favored teacher that Republicans are bad, that America is bad and that white American's are bad, then guess what. They start to believe it and then they start to take action upon it. It isn't the pledge of allegiance or the National Anthem that Kapernick deplores, it is the perceived injustice he has towards certain groups in our society. But what he is doing and then others joining in, will eventually degrade the meaning of something very significant to so many. Does he have a right? Sure a right secured to him by the very people he betrays now. The ones that died on the battlefield or were severely injured protecting these rights for people then and people now and for people years to come. We all have to make important stances in our life, but just as Kapernick makes his stance, people like myself have the right to stop going to those football games that pay his million dollar salary. We have the right to call him a traitor and an idiot. I hope there are many more of me who will speak out because to do nothing would be a shame.
