Turner, whose six-month sentence for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at Stanford University sparked national outcry, has been released from jail after serving half his term.

The one-time Olympic hopeful swimmer walked out the main entrance of the Santa Clara County jail Friday shortly after 6 a.m. PDT. Turner, who kept his head down and didn't acknowledge the media, got into a white SUV. He plans to head to his native Ohio to live with his parents. The 21-year-old must register as a sex offender for life and faces three years of supervised probation.

While I don't think Brock Turner should have gotten such a light sentence for what he did, the consequences of having a criminal conviction and being a registered sex-offender will follow him for the rest of his days.

With that short sentence he can still buy a gun while many DUI (multiple offenders) cannot for life. If some other rapist of a passed out victim later claims that their (much longer) sentence was cruel and unusual punishment is that then a valid claim?

Michael Vick got 21 months for (felony) being mean to dogs and then resumed his NFL career. That will follow him for the rest of his days. ;)

I didn't even know that.

No. I don't even agree that Brock should have even gotten a light sentence as he did. He should have gotten the 6 years, and I was PO'ed when he only got 6 months.

I'm still mad he got released this early, but I guess I'm just trying to look at the good out of the bad.

I think rape is viewed way more harshly by society than dog fighting is.

And there was quite a few people that defended Vic.

Nope - three felony sexual assault convictions got Brock a 3 month sentence while animal cruelty conviction(s?) got Vick 21 months. It would appear that (long term?) animal cruelty is 7X worse than a (short term?) rape.

I understand Vick was in for longer. I'm talking about societies' reaction to it.

Most people see rape as deplorable (for obvious reasons). That's why nearly everyone was outraged by this, because Brock deserved a much longer sentence than six months.

When it comes to dogfighting, there are some people out there that will actually defend it. There were even some athletes and sports commentators that defended Michael vic.

There were obviously advocates for Brock's far shorter sentence as well. What society thinks has little, if any, bearing on what a judge ultimately hands down as "society's" sentence. This is why many in society favor mandatory minimum (and maximum) sentences - not simply loose sentencing "guidelines" left up to any judge to ignore.
