Majority of Voters Want Donald Trump to Release Tax Returns: Poll

Aug. 29, 2016

A new poll shows over half of voters think it’s a least somewhat important that presidential candidates release their tax returns, signaling voters want to see what Donald Trump’s returns reveal. A new Monmouth University poll shows 62% of voters think it’s either very important or somewhat important to them that candidates release their returns; some 54%of Clinton supporters think it’s very important. Thirty-six percent of voters, however, say it’s not important. It’s worth noting, too, that nearly three-fourths of voters, 72%, know Trump hasn’t yet released his returns, but only 56% of voters know that Clinton has released hers.

Whether you agree with the tradition or not, every presidential candidate for the past 40 years has released their tax returns for public scrutiny. 72% of Americans are keenly aware that Trump refuses to honor this tradition despite IRS assurances that he may do so. There is a growing impression that Mr. Trump is knowingly and purposefully concealing embarrassing/damaging financial data.

Since Trump has elected to ignore this tradition and discard common-sense politics, the Clinton campaign will no doubt rollup some easy mileage here via tv/radio ads and as debate fodder.

I think the problem at this point is people think he is hiding something. This adds to "his" trust factor issue.

I honestly just don't care. Health issues, for either candidate, are a reasonable concern, but I just am not too worried about tax returns. If they've done something illegal, then that's between them and the IRS. But releasing tax returns just isn't something I care about at all.

And yes, I think there's a reason he's not releasing them (likely because people would criticize something in them), but I can just think of a whole host of things I care about far more than tax returns.

The only reason I think Trump should release them is because he has called on others in the past to release theirs. I'm no fan of the tradition but I dislike hypocrisy even more.

This is a dishonest representation.
He has not refused.
He said he will do so once the audit is done.
What they IRS says regarding that is irrelevant.

I am not a fan of the "requirement" (read: expectation, not literal requirement) to release tax returns, but I will admit that I am mildly curious. More about his charitable activities, if nothing else. He keeps telling us how great and compassionate he is, so I'd like to see if he really is.

That being said, my key word was "mildly". It's not a high-priority issue for me.

do you really think anyone is going to change their mind at this point over his tax returns?

really?

if she uses this in her ads, she will be wasting money....

i say go for it....maybe it will allow him back into the race

Sometimes small things say a lot.

What Trump's refusal says more than anything is that he lacks the political acumen of every presidential candidate of the past 40 years.

again...if you think you can change votes with that ad spend....full speed ahead

if you hadnt noticed by now....Trump is NOTHING like any candidate we have ever seen....

i think he likes it that way....not sure if it is a winning formula....but it sure isnt politics as usual

this has got to be the most bizarre election season i have ever witnessed

and that is saying something

Because there is little chance that Trump gained his wealth through elected office I don't care. All other people that released their tax records were politicians and the public has a reason to ask for their tx records. Not that the dems care how much money the dems have made while in office.

Oh look, more dishonesty.
There has been no refusal.
Stop being dishonest.

The majority of voters can work through the process and pass a Constitutional Amendment requiring politicians to release tax and medical records as a requirement for office.

That Trump, he's such a *****. He flaunts his wealth and business success, yet he's too timid to put it to public scrutiny.

I bet everybody is impressed with your tough talk. Not!
Your reply was nothing more than absurdly biased to an extreme.
He said they will be released after the audit has finished.

Nobody would care about his tax returns any more than non-partisans cared about Obama's college transcripts, except Trump's credentials, according to him, are "I'm rich". So he invited whatever scrutiny he's getting.

He won't release them, probably because he knows he's going to lose in November and he wants to keep them private.

This is a dishonest representation.
He has not refused.
He said he will do so once the audit is done.
What they IRS says regarding that is irrelevant.

He also says that he has been audited for over twelve years now, maybe It will never be "done".

The IRS is probably closing in on him so he is running for President to avoid jail time !

Please stop raping the English language with your grammatical retardation.
Please stop thinking you can distinguish between the language being raped or not
It is obviously you can't as you are wrong in this case.

This would be waayyy less of an issue if a)Trump had not called on other candidates to release their tax returns and b)if he wasn't running on the sole qualification of being rich and successful.

Cue Donald supporters' favorite straw man: "A tax return doesn't reveal total net wealth!"

Bs!
1. Everyone knows he is rich and successful.
2. He said he would release them after the audit is over.

It is only an issue because idiots think he is hiding something.

I would like him to release them just to get the issue behind us. But, I can't imagine I would publish my tax returns online if I was being audited either.

1. Everyone knows he is rich and successful.

Okay, tell me his net worth.

2. He said he would release them after the audit is over.

"Clinton to release emails after election."

Please tell me how that would go over.

Now obviously you will not respond to either of these requests in good faith, so I think I've made my point.

The Oracle of Omaha has an interesting take on this:

I’ll bring my return, he’ll bring his return, we’re both under audit. You will learn a whole lot more about Donald Trump if he produces his income tax returns.

As someone who’s filled out financial statements and someone who’s filled out an income tax return, I can tell ya, they are two very different animals.

He’s not afraid because of the IRS, he’s afraid because of you. You’re only afraid if you’ve got something to be afraid about.

And we are talking about a guy who could buy Trump 20 times over.

Okay, tell me his net worth.
Why do you think I have to provided his net worth?
We all know he is rich. Forbes says it is around 4.5b and Trump says it is around 10b. In other words - Billions.
Richer than anyone on this board. Are you really going to deny that?
Has there been any candidate richer?
Are you going to deny that he has had multiple successful businesses vs few failures as well?

Just stop with the ridiculous bs. He is extremely wealthy which comes from being successful.

Made a point? iLOL Is that what you think you have done?
Well you haven't.
Clinton's email problem has to do with her actual government service, which the people are entitled to know.
