In their acceptance letter, the incoming class at the University of Chicago were given a strong mandate by the institution they have elected to join: “Members of our community are encouraged to speak, write, listen, challenge and learn, without fear of censorship. Civility and mutual respect are vital to all of us, and freedom of expression does not mean the freedom to harass or threaten others. You will find that we expect members of our community to be engaged in rigorous debate, discussion, and even disagreement. At times this may challenge you and even cause discomfort.”

One way to ensure this, writes Dean of Students Jay Ellison in the letter obtained by Intellectual Takeout, is to eliminate “trigger warnings” and “safe spaces,” two topics of frequent discussion in recent years. A trigger warning is advance notice about subject material that may be difficult for certain students to read, hear or see; a safe space is a place they can go to avoid those subjects or heal after confronting them. Often used at least with the stated attempt of avoiding inflicting further trauma on victims, particularly those of sexual assault, the methods have also been criticized as means of preventing students and lecturers from exploring difficult issues together. As TIME reported in May, a Knight Foundation survey showed that “54 percent of students said the climate on campus prevents some people from saying what they believe because they are fearful of offending others.”
I think I just found a school I would like to do a master's degree at. At least one institution is standing up to the SJW bull****.

I have been triggered by this revelation.

I need a safe space with Play-Doh and fluffy pillows.

Political correctness has castrated and lobotomized our youth into soft, non-thinking sycophants who can't cope with an unhappy ending in a Disney movie.

What ??

When, in your world, do parents get responsibility for raising their kids ??

What "SJW bull****" ?

Making an effort not to offend people is "SJW bull****" ??

I feel like the people who fight this just wanna run around shouting "NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER" and it just breaks their fragile, little snowflake hearts that other forces discourage them from doing so.

Admitting they have a problem is the first step on the path to a solution.

About time that some institute of higher education lends some sort of education to their students, rather than just liberal / progressive indoctrination.

I wonder how many liberal / progressive professor's heads are about to explode over this.

This safe space, trigger warning, white privilege, and getting offended by anything that challenges your views nonsense. There is a big difference between being polite and being politically correct. Being politically correct hurts society by silencing other's opinions. I also hate to break this to you but university is not a safe space, it is meant to challenge the very foundation of your views and opinions. People should not be prevented from from discussing things because it paints "people of colour" in a bad light, discussing the positive impacts of white people in history because it apparently marginalizes minorities or accepting of your bull**** made-up gender. I should be able to give a presentation on Nazi culture without being an anti-semite, I should be able to call mixed-race people in South Africa Cloloured or Black people Black without being called racist.

"Back in my day" old nonsense talk.

Probably not very many, in my experience professors tend to frown upon political correctness.

This seems to run counter to what some / many / most are preaching in their classes to their students.

Well all the cases of professors teaching normally never make it into the news.

No, people want to have the freedom to ask question like "Why is black on black violence being given such minimal attention by the black community? If there was as much attention being given to this issue as there is to BLM type protests, you might be saving a hundreds (thousands??) of lives every year." But just asking that kind of question gets you treated like you're a KKK member.

What "SJW bull****" ?

Safe Spaces, Trigger Warnings, calling everything under the sun racist and sexist, silencing others from challenging their viewpoint, all of that is SJW BS.

Making an effort not to offend people is "SJW bull****" ??

Oh, If only that's what Political Correctness was.

No, it is not just a simple effort to not offend people. It is an effort to control people's speech.

Basically language control.

I feel like the people who fight this just wanna run around shouting "NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER" and it just breaks their fragile, little snowflake hearts that other forces discourage them from doing so.

I listen to many different speakers and entertainers who are against all this SJW nonsense (Sargon of Akkad, Dave Rubin), and none of them are racists.

They and I, like most anti-SJW's, are against lauguage control; against someone telling people what they can and can't say, and what sensibilities they are allowed to hold. And we are against silencing others from speaking simply because they have a different viewpoint, because SJW's don't like having their viewpoints challenged.

AG, there is a difference between not being an asshole, and SJW Crying foul at anything that hurts dare widdle feewings.

I have come to the conclusion that some people need trigger warnings for trigger warnings.

This thread is a good example of why.

This guy is going to be in for a rough ride because there are going to be alot of spineless nancies who are not going to be happy about this.

I theorize that protests will be launched, maybe a petition or 2 calling for his removal.

This safe space, trigger warning, white privilege, and getting offended by anything that challenges your views nonsense.

Oh, wow, that's ironic: you're against "SJW nonsense" because you're afraid of speech about "white privilege" ?

And "getting offended by anything that challenges your views" is a strawman. Can you name a major university that has policies against speech that challenges views ??

There is a big difference between being polite and being politically correct.

No there isn't. Not out here in reality.

Political Correctness : Political correctness (adjectivally: politically correct), commonly abbreviated to PC,[1] is a term that, in modern usage, is used to describe language, policies, or measures that are intended not to offend or disadvantage any particular group of people in society.
-wikipedia

Polite : having or showing behavior that is respectful and considerate of other people.

Considerate : careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt to others.

Being PC is literally being considerate of other people.

You know what's more sickening than "SJW nonsense" ?? Whining about the fact that people encourage considerate speech.

Being politically correct hurts society by silencing other's opinions.

That's bull****. You're trying to censor "SJW nonsense," that's why this is so ironic. You're trying to silence schools that create guidelines to help manage student bodies in the tens of thousands. Apparently, you think that schools should be forced to provide audiences of tens of thousands of young adults for bigots.

Myself, i think organizations should be free to provide their own guidelines to manage their own constituents.

I also hate to break this to you but university is not a safe space, it is meant to challenge the very foundation of your views and opinions.

I never suggested otherwise. In fact, your "fight" seems to be to be an attempt to refuse any challenges to bigotry.

People should not be prevented from from discussing things because it paints "people of colour" in a bad light, discussing the positive impacts of white people in history because it apparently marginalizes minorities or accepting of your bull**** made-up gender.

Another strawman. Private citizens in their own capacity (generally) have freedom of speech. That freedom is not obligated to extend to every institution, both public and private.

I should be able to give a presentation on Nazi culture without being an anti-semite, I should be able to call mixed-race people in South Africa Cloloured or Black people Black without being called racist.

Oh look, another strawman. Please explain to me how providing a disclaimer on a lecture whose topic is the Holocaust somehow curtails freedom in any meaningful way.

How dare you!! I was once taken advantage of on a a fluffy pillow. You and your micro-aggressive pillows need to find someplace else to play with your Play-Doh.

Actually I heard you took advantage of a fluffy pillow...

Sorry.. couldn't resist. :3oops:

Freedom of speech means that other people are free to criticize your speech, too.

What ??

When, in your world, do parents get responsibility for raising their kids ??

A few years ago I had to ask my sister what a "play date" was. She explained it and I said, "This is a joke, right?" Oh, no. Sending kids out to play just isn't right.

And check out the reaction on this site to a school in Arkansas that said parents could come into the school to bring things their high school students had forgotten like their books, their homework, or their lunch. Duh!

And, you'd be wrong. I am not politically correct but I try always to be polite. I was in a meeting once and used a bad word. People started screaming. I looked around to see who they were screaming at and it was me. I didn't know what horrible, horrible thing I'd done.

I had used the word "Oriental". Oh, my god. How terrible.

Now, tell me, who is the jackass? These politically correct pricks or a guy who's trying to be polite. To make it perfectly clear, I stood up and told the nitwits that I new the "bad" words for Orientals. Then I listed some of them. Someone said, "But they prefer Asian." I said that if someone had told me that, I would have used the word, "Asian". I noted there weren't any Asians in the meeting. But, if you want to scream at me like spoiled brats, be ready for me to fight back. For what it's worth, I have been requesting the book of codewords, dogwhistles, triggerwords, miniaggressions and other silliness for some time and no one has told me where I can get a book to study.

So, you can take your nonsense and your feelings and give some thought to courtesy.

And, I want you to know that if your little victim heart is broken, that's really too bad.
