Colombia’s government and leftwing Farc rebels have reached a final and comprehensive peace deal to end the country’s 52-year war that has left more than 220,000 people dead and six million displaced. After four years at the peace table negotiators are due to sign the final deal Wednesday evening in Havana, where they have been holding talks since November 2012.
The signing will kick off what promises to be a frenzied campaign to ratify the deal in a popular plebiscite that could come in late September or early October.
Meanwhile the Farc’s estimated 7,000 fighters will hold a congress of their own to approve the deal and formally end their existence as a guerrilla army and transform into an unarmed political movement.
As part of the peace deal, they have agreed to concentrate their troops in 23 areas scattered across the country, where they will gradually hand over their weapons to UN observers over six months.

Some great news! :applaud:rock:2razz:
Im sure both the plebiscite and the FARC congress will vote in favor of the deal.
Its about time these conflict comes to an end and for both sides be only involved in peaceful participation.
Diplomacy for the win!

 now that's funny. Diplomacy worked because the FARC got their butts kicked.
FARC finally realized there wasn't any way they were going to win, huh.

I wouldnt say its as black and white as that. It was about finding a way for both sides after a long historical struggle to find common ground to find ways to first come to the table and negotiate and then find a way to hear sides both legitimate grievances and find a way to come to a final deal. This has been done after 4+ year long peace negotiations.

Colombia integrated and utilized effective counter insurgency strategy, and absolutely wrecked the FARC. But okedoke :)

Pastrana gave FARC a 16,000 square mile a safe zone back in 1998. They turned around and promptly tried to use it as a base to try to launch a renewed offensive.

I have no sympathy for these assholes.

Never said you have sympathy for them or that they didnt continue their insurgency. Just simply pointing out that its not a black and white issue.

Never said that they were not weakened by the Colombian government simply saying that this is a historic peace deal that is finally brining an end to this long a bloody conflict and that both sides had valid grievances

Hell, I'm suprised the Colombiam government tried to negotiate again after that. That was a pretty big "f-you" FARC gave them.m

The thing about a guerilla insurgency like the FARC, and with the size of the FARC, and their presence in the country its very hard to completely exterminate.

But FARC also wasn't particularly well run and had lost a lot of support after the various violations they'd committed.

And I wouldnt disagree with that statement either.
