Ryan Lochte lied about robbery, Brazilian police official says

A customer was there translating for them, so there was no language barrier, besides that is not where they said they were robbed.

They fabricated a story about being stopped in a taxi by uniformed men.

I think you are overestimating the cognitive capabilities of (mostly) young, drunk, male swimmers in the wee hours of the morning after a night of no sleep.

That's not to say the story wasn't embellished at a later point. I just don't think it would be as clear-cut in the moment.

That's a different link than the one you posted previously.

Neither link in any way suggests the police lied. The police originally said they did not point their guns at the athletes and that is true. Upon further investigation at the scene of the crime, the gas bar, they became aware that the gas bar's security pointed a gun at the athletes who were caught in the process of vandalizing the gas bar's bathroom facilities.

So now we not only have Lochte and others caught filing a false police report about being robbed by police, but we now also have witness and video evidence of the athletes in the act of committing the crime of vandalism and by their own admission trying to pay off the gas bar and security for the vandalism rather than being charged by police.

Such fine young men - I can see why you're so gung ho to support them in every way.

Both links, combined suggest and might prove that the police lied.

Holding someone at gunpoint, until they have up the money? That would be a crime in the States.

Sure it would.

A security guard would be well within his right to hold 4 suspects that had just destroyed property until the police got there.

You are going to have to define "lie" at this point.

The Brazilian police reported what they knew to be true at the time and changed the report after they interviewed all involved.

Where is the lie in what they did?

Do you think because they are Brazilian that they are somehow incompetent in what they are doing?

This would have happened the same way in the US.

So from what I've read; they left a party (probably intoxicated) and stopped at gas station or store to use the bathroom on their way back to their accomodations. A physical altercation took place, property was damaged, and money exchanged hands. That probably would have been the end of it if Lochte hadn't gone to the media and concoted that ridiculous story. The US Olympic Commitee needs to hand down some disciplinary action.

I think it was Lochte's mother that first mentioned a robbery to the media...and that got their attention. So it appears that Lochte first lied to his mother.

It is so nice to have fine athletes for our kids to look up to. But they fit the system of ethics of the sports organizations like FIFA or IOC. It is so wonderful, when the best fit does gold.

They said they had video proof that there were no guns involved. Its been reported that the security guards held the swimmers at gunpoint, until they paid up. Sounds like a lie, to me.

But, that isn't what happened. Is it?

And who is that Olympic official saying, "Give em' a break guys, they're just kids."

Ryan is 32 years old, not 15. He's responsible for his actions just as much as anyone else.

I got the impression that it was a Brazil games official who said that!

The AP reported that two of the other swimmers stated there was no robbery, but sometimes there's a fine line between a robbery and a shakedown. Regardless, there seem to be quite a few holes in Lochte's story. Assuming he lied, no one's going to give a damn about him or his medals when all is said and done.

Now I'm seeing stuff like this on Twitter:

Mike Brown was a "thug" for "roughing up" a gas attendant. @RyanLochte does it and he's just having a good time. Oh, whiteness. #LochteGate

According to racist ppl: Trayvon Martin - 17 - Man Mike Brown - 18 - Man @RyanLochte - 32 - "JUST A KID."

I think these people fail to realise that almost no one is defending Ryan Lochte for what he did.

Like I said before, those kids just want to go home. I bet they're scared enough to say anything.

There's evidence--not proof--that the Brazilian police lied. The same evidence supports Lochte's story.

If this happened in The United States, the atheletes would be released, immediately, with apologies.

I remember thinking the first time he told that story that he was lying. He just told it like he was, just something rubbed me wrong with how he was coming off.

Who told it like it was?

He pissed outside...ohhhh the horror!

Yea, because he is a spoiled little moron who made the US look bad internationally.

Thankfully, his career is toast, and he will never live this down ever, both within and outside the swimming community.

Yeah, nevermind that it appears he didn't lie, after all.

You mean the story that they were pulled over in the taxi by guys with guns and one of them put a gun to his head, forced him to get on the ground, and took his wallet? Where's the evidence that supports that version of events?

That's what it looks like. You even agreed that such a scenario is a crime.

The story he told was that they were stopped in a taxi and the uniformed men put a gun to his head and he was robbed.

That never happened.

Also holding 4 drunks until they pay for damage is not a robbery, gun or not.

I think the vast majority of non-Russian athletes are exceptional young people who show dedication and a terrific work ethic that would be of great benefit to most of us. I can think of many fine young Canadian athletes who've done this country proud and I'm equally sure that many young American athletes have also done America proud. The IOC and FIFA are disgraceful but that shouldn't be down-flected - new word!! - to the athletes. Many times, like with the boxing competition this year, the athletes are far superior to the officials who judge them.

But there is something to be said for a sense of entitlement that some star athletes may display based on the level of "celebrity" they may enjoy.

Who told it like it was?

Sorry, I miss-worded that. I just remember seeing him interviewed right after it happened and him saying that he had a gun put to his forehead and I thought that guy is lying.
