Turkish Prime Minister says military coup attempt underway[W 323]

Well certainly wouldn't mind seeing Erdogan and the AKP gone, do have to say I'm a bit worried about what'll happen. Basically, my understanding, AKP is still popular in Turkey, with thoughts the main reason they lost some support recently is more due to Erdogan than the party itself. If kicking Erdogan out will change the party has to be seen, if not then things might start to get a bit ugly (unfortunately).

:/ Who's in charge then?

I understand that the Turkish chief of staff is just a puppet installed by Erdogan.
The high ranking officers of the Turkish military are behind this coup.

“This is an attack against Turkish democracy. A group within the armed forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command. The statement made on behalf of the Armed Forces wasn’t authorised by the military command. We urge the world to stand in solidarity with the Turkish people.”

It's always a time to be worried in situations like this, but historically they've been the good guys, always returning power to civilian government once things have stabilized.

Popular elections don't always provide the best party for their people or for the people around them. If you're in Israel you might recall that the Palestinians chose Hamas about a decade ago.

I think it also became a problem when Erdogan and his party suddenly started passing anti-democratic laws and changing the Turkish constitution.
We need to remember that it's not the people who are revolting here, it is the military, it has its own reasons and we will only know it once they make a statement. Reports say they will make one very soon.

'''Attempt''' at Coup in Turkey, Prime Minister Says - NBC News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was said to be out of the country on vacation Friday. He became president in 2014 after previously serving as prime minister for three terms. It was the country's first direct presidential election.

Erdogan has been criticized in recent years over crackdowns on media freedoms, following a corruption investigation that was shut down as an attempt to overthrow him

Turkish military making a statement right now.

So the military is trying to seize power from the local Islamist regime?

Turkey trying to take its country back.

Turkish military stating that Erodgan has eroded the democratic and secular nature of the Turkish Republic, and a peace council is now in control of the country, and a new constitution will be drafted up soon.

Turkish military declaring a curfew in the entire country and declared "a military rule in Turkey" on Turkish national TV.

Turkish military bombing buildings in Turkey.

Not a surprise, our news is often like that. One of the things, for all the criticism they got (some fair), Al Jazeera America was good for. Anything ME/in that area/Africa they'd cover.

BBC has a news channel now on DirecTV, so might have it. Though, they aren't always better lately (e.g. during the Ataturk attacks, went to find their live blog and had to use google to do so as the entire front page was about Brexit). Oddly enough The Atlantic has/had a live blog for the coup.
