But flip that around. If calling them "another name" wouldn't make them go away then why avoid using the term that describes exactly what they are? Why use their own propaganda names instead of just calling them radical Islamic terrorists?
Why shy from this? Why not give the people of your own country some comfort and assurance that you are on their side?

Generally speaking, it's much more difficult to solve a problem if one doesn't properly define the problem. If the problem is "Radical Islamists", then one looks at different solution spaces than if the problem is "Mental Health", or "guns", or "weak leadership", or "poor diplomacy". Words actually mean something, and avoiding certain phrases not to offend "potential allies" is just repeating the cycle of failure. After all, if these potential allies are inherently against acts of violence done in the name of their religion, shouldn't they be ashamed and angry at the perversion of their beliefs and volunteer aid in stamping out such extremism? If not, then I fail to see what phrase is used to describe the acts will be a deciding factor.

The 'now what' is to start thinking rationally. The refusal to link the extremists to Islam is akin to refusing to link the KKK to racism. Referring to these monsters as Islamic extremists is actually the best way to isolate them from the rest of the religion. To drop the 'Islam" part only serves to neuter the way you could possibly respond to the bad action. If this guy in Orlando was just an extremist, what kind of extremist was he? Was he an extremist in his love for ice cream? Are all extremists equally deadly? Unless you identify the context of that extremism, you are defenseless and immobilized when it comes to combatting it. Islam is the fuel behind the extremism. Islam is the cause; violence is the effect. You cant fight the effect while ignoring the cause.

Do you think that validating these terrorists by labeling them as Islamic, (instead of the thugs, thieves and cowards they are,) thus giving them the image they want as true representatives of Islam will serve any good purpose? I think the term "radical islam" is an important one because it distinguishes from everyday adherents to the Islamic faith who just live quiet peaceful lives.
