1 in 3 American malls are doomed

I hate shopping, so whatever. If I could do all the shopping from the house I would be very happy.

There are two malls near me. One was just about completely out of business. Walmart went in and the light rail has a stop there and now it is flourishing. The other one is half empty, but Walmart is reported to be going in there as well opening later this year. We shall see.

I remember that mall cause I know exactly which mall you are talking about... Christown. I recall going there and all I would see was just a bunch of young teenage girls pushing their babies around in strollers. It was freaky. What a turnaround they made with the huge Target and the light rail going there. I moved not too long after the light rail got in place. There are so many malls there.

I've never liked malls. I've never liked that white stuff that forms in the corners of Bill Nye's mouth, either. If the malls and Bill Nye's mouth both close, I'll be happy. These are the only two obstacles between me and complete bliss. Wait a second. There's bubble packs, too. Malls, Bill Nye and bubble packs. And those things you buy at the grocery that claim to hold two servings. Two servings? For what? A mouse? Liars. So, malls, Bill Nye, bubble packs, and misleading labeling. That and whatever perversion of real food some health nut is hawking - like this beet crap some woman is pushing. Who in the hell needs to consume the equivalent of ten beets a day or whatever? And it doesn't taste like dirt? That's a selling point? So, malls, Bill Nye, bubble packs, misleading labeling, and beet poison.

And don't forget all those libruls standing in between you and bliss.

Don't worry, Trump will make malls great again!

What is the cause of all of this? Ever hear of Amazon?

Even before the internet started taking down brick and mortar stores I recall it all being trendy. Malls would be the go-to place to shop then all the sudden people would leave the traditional malls to shop in outlet malls. Then the outlets would die out as people trended back to the traditional malls. Shopping destinations become as trendy as the products themselves.

No doubt he will first address the Mall of America.

Make Mall of America Great Again!

Malls deserve to die a horrible death, then perhaps spend a little time burning in hell.

Atrocious places.

It's been at least seven years since I bought anything in a "mall", and nearly 20 since I even semi-regularly shopped in them. About the only thing would be suits or other nice/formal clothes at an anchor store like Macy's or similar, but even then there are MUCH better options than going to a mall. A great many of them are GFZs so no, no thank you, I'll take my business elsewhere.

WTF is a GFZ?

I know of a couple malls here in the area that are headed that way. There's Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia, Georgia. There's Gwinnett Place Mall, in Duluth, Georgia. There's Albany Mall in Albany, Georgia. All three are in deep trouble, more empty stores than open.

The rail now goes to Dunlap and 19th ave soon to go to Metro Center. Plans are for it to go all the way to Gateway by where the Cardinals and Coyotes play.

When I left there was still nothing out there by the stadiums. I heard that's all grown up now.

Almost all of the main retailers are reporting horrible sales numbers, JCP today being just the latest. JCP, Sears, Kmart are all going away, Macy's is going to shrink big time, there is just no way we avoid a massive shrinkage of brick and mortar stores. Lots of controversy about why the numbers are so bad, but my gut instinct is that increased housing and Obamacare healthcare costs are sucking people dry, people simply have little money to spend, and what they do have they want to spend on experiences rather than accumulating crap. However I do note that a increasing number of experts are saying that retailers have not modernized the shopping experience inline with customer expectations, that this failure to perform has lead to a boycott of the entire sector in favor of Amazon.

Oh well, I hate shopping in general and mall in particular. It will be sad to see all of those malls dead, all of those people out of work, but it is going to happen anyways.

You are not exactly showing us the future, but are rather just catching up. Probably 1/2 the malls of 20 years ago are already gone.. DeadMalls.com... since you missed the trend that has been going on for 20 years now, I would suggest you "gut instinct" isn't worth a damn.... this is why people should not just post impressions (things from their gut), but actually take the time to learn something as to why before wasting the time of everyone else. In short, find something else to blame on Obamacare.

BTW... I hear flat screen TV's are going to replace the tube.

I had three malls locally. One is gone, just an empty husk. The city wanted to turn it into their main offices but that fell through. One is virtually dead, I walked into it around Christmas and there are 3 stores still open inside. The third is still doing okay, at least they are full, but over the holidays, I knew people who worked there and they said this was the worst Christmas in years.

Malls are doomed. Adios.

It's too bad, I have great memories of hanging out at the mall. I don't go as much since the ones closest to me closed and recently the one I did go to changed their food court and removed the place that made this amazing chicken teriyaki.

You know the malls are doing bad when the McDonalds inside goes out of business, as happened here.

Remember how Dawn of the Dead was Romero's critique of consumerist culture moving to the shopping malls, and how no one today could understand that? That's why the Snyder film left all semblance of social commentary in favor of fast moving zombies, zombie-shredding cars, and a zombie baby. Aside from the accident of being there, the mall was otherwise inconsequential to the plot of the remake. Soon people will be fascinated at the concept that people were eager to walk in vast acreage to get materials it could have accrued in a series of small shops scattered throughout town---or with the benefits of modern technology: the internet.

Hulk Hogan, actually. I suppose it works the same way, given that the Hulkster has backed Trump. Anyway, I thought about how early primetime WCW was shot in the Mall of America.

Where will the kids hang out? On street corners?

Looks to me like they use phone apps to meet up in the strip malls. But why hang out when you can sit at home on your smartphone and/or game?

The snacks are better and the parents pay.

You can even do it in your shorts.

Ya Know?

Malls generally attracted a lot of young people. Even when I was kid, me and my friends would go there to hang out without having to be around parents for a few hours, and maybe see a movie, and get some food. These days, most kids are too involved in their cell phone to really care about going out and spending time in reality. Also, Amazon basically allows you to get anything you wanted from the mall if you are patient enough to wait a couple days with Prime Shipping. They are generally much cheaper than the mall too. I think people are still not back to the old ways of buying useless things they don't need as much as before the recession. People take a second thought and realize maybe they don't need twelve pairs of the same exact jeans.

Also, at least near me, the malls that we have are now surrounded by about 1,000 different stores and places to eat where you don't have to deal with hundreds of people walking slowly in lines. If I wanted to get a video game, an ice cream, and a cheap fast food meal when I was a kid, the mall was the best place for that. Now, I just drive to a strip mall, go to store 1, 2, and 3 and finish in half the time. And I am not bound to the selections at the mall.

The malls around Norfolk/Virginia Beach are dying slowly.

Businesses are going elsewhere, or shutting down due to the slow economy.

Street punks aren't making things any better for the malls either, as a lot of people are being turned off from shopping at them.

BS on blaming Obamacare. More and more people are buying things on the Internet with a couple clicks of a mouse. And of course brick and mortar stores have higher overhead. And no parking hassles or finding out what you want is is not in stock.

Things change in the business world and those who don't adapt perish. As simple as that.
