Alabama city passes anti-LGBT bathroom ordinance punishable by $500/6 months jail

When the party that advocates policing of bathrooms is the very same party that begged a judge to keep child molester Dennis Hastert out of jail, you come to the realization that they are not what they claim to be.

The fact that this is being called an LGBT issue when it really has nothing to do with Lesbians, Gays nor Bi-Sexuals.

Technically correct, but they all join together in a mutually supportive block.

Oh, you forgot the Qs and the As and some other letters, too. :2razz:

Title shortened to fitLMAO . . .WOW

Thats it . . I hope these nutters keep pushing it and making these laws and ordinances because its only going to help make true what they fear. LGBT having equal rights and or being protected from discrimination. Its awesome and their fear is hilarious.
They're trying to make a point, but are too short-sighted to realize that by being absurd... I mean, really, 6 mos in jail???* (as if $500 itself isn't too much)... all they're going to accomplish in the long run is creating empathy for transgender restroom choice. It's going to happen, and they will have helped it along.

*- It's dip-turd crap like this is why we have such a high incarceration rate, but that's another topic for another thread.

How is requiring men to use the men's room and women use the women's room discrimination?

It's "up to" 6 months in jail - it's probably just standard language for a minor misdemeanor.

Right, and chances are no one would ever actually get jail time, but... jail time is not mandatory to be part of any 'crime', and the presence of ANY jail time for this is absurd and unnecessary. Just because it's SOP isn't a good reason. There are some things we should be rethinking in our society as SOP, and this is one of them.

If someone continues to violate the law, and fines aren't having any effect, what would you suggest?

Nah, they have been warned.. If they violate, throw them in jail..

If we were to choose jail time for a habitual violator, I'd prefer that x-number of offenses (3, minimum) be specified before jail is used as an option.

This might be a better and more sane option (for this particular offense)...

1st offense: $100 fine
2nd offense: $250 fine
3rd offense: $500 fine, and possible jail time, up to 30 days
4th offense+: $500 fine AND jail time, 90 days minimum

Not saying I approve of this law, just addressing the side aspect of appropriate punishment.

Are you suggesting that jail time for this particular offense is justified? If so, why? If not, why do we need the law vaguely written to allow it as an option?

6 months in prison? That seems excessive.

I don't quite understand the outrage about transgendered using the bathroom of the gender they identify with. I doubt there is going to be some massive upswing in sexual assaults or misconduct because of it. And if people push too hard, we're going to be left with those crappy unisex bathrooms that only admit one person at a time. Think of the lines for the bathroom then!

Community service for non-violent crimes.

I don't know what the alternative would be for people who refuse or who cannot pay fines (for this or any other minor offence. I agree it would be crazy to throw a neighbor in jail because they were playing music much too loud, but if that same person continues to do so, and warnings and fines have no effect, it seems that you're left with either throwing them in jail, banishing them from the city, or allowing them to ignore the law.

And if they ignore that?

They can't really ignore that. There's all sorts of intrusions the government can mandate before jail. Ultimately the government does have the guns, so yes they can throw someone in jail of they refuse everything else. But for non-violent crimes that should be an absolute last resort. I would support garnishing wages before jail time for most non-violent crimes.

But to be clear, this specific law that is the topic of this thread is absolutely retarded.

Well this is definitely going to escalate the legal challenges and this small city is dumb as **** to risk financial ruin if someone is ever arrested. So much for backlash only happening to those who support lgbt
The city has sovereign immunity and sympathetic courts. I doubt they are wooried about paying anything in suits.

Maybe discrimination is now defined as: "Failure to facilitate all sexual expressions of all people"?

Discrimination is anything the Liberals don't like.

Since it doesn't seem anyone said it thus far (if I missed it then my apologies).
The most frustrating thing about this is that the more cities that engage in this waste of time, the larger it will become until everybody's tax money (instead of a few select townsfolk's) is being wasted on a seriously stupid non-issue legislature that even those who "support" it say can't be enforced in any logical way.

More and more, I am thinking Idiocracy was a documentary not a comedy.

Just like they define their favorite expression of "the community" as: People who think like I do are part of the "community".

Having Men use Men's washrooms and Women use Women's washrooms is now anti-LGBT? This idea must have begun quite recently because it's one that's been around for a very long.

Have women been surveyed for their input to this latest fashion or is their rights to privacy being ignored?

Was this a real problem? This is out of control. We have real issues besides bathroom use.

And those who aren't in sync are 'extreme right wing'.

In fact it might well be a cloak for the real issues that genuinely need discussing. Not a bad ploy in an election cycle..

I don't disagree, but sometimes there are instances where people should take a stand just for principle. Unfortunately, where that is will vary per the number of people.
