Pressed on an Abortion Ban, Donald Trump Sees a Penalty for Women
By MAGGIE HABERMAN MARCH 30, 2016

Donald J. Trump, pressed Wednesday on his support for a ban on abortion and what it would mean in practice, said that “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who have abortions.

The remark, which set off an immediate firestorm of bipartisan criticism, was the latest in a series that could be highly damaging to Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, in a general election. His approval ratings among women are already low nationally.

Mr. Trump made the comments in a town-hall-style forum with Chris Matthews of MSNBC, which was prerecorded for broadcast Wednesday night. Mr. Matthews pressed Mr. Trump on his support for a ban on abortion, asking him how he would enforce such a ban.

Mr. Trump, who formerly supported abortion rights but in recent years has changed his position, sought to dodge the question a few times, calling it “a very serious problem.”

“I am pro-life,” Mr. Trump said after a few attempts. Asked how an abortion ban would be put in place, he said, “You go back to a position like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places. But you have to ban it.”

Finally, Mr. Matthews asked Mr. Trump, “You’re about to be chief executive of the United States. Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no?”

Mr. Trump responded: “The answer is there has to be some form of punishment.”

“Ten days?” Mr. Matthews asked. “Ten years?”

Mr. Trump replied: “I don’t know,” adding, “It’s a very complicated position.”

Wow. I cant believe a clown like this could be nominated for President. The last thing you want in the White House is a guy who just makes stuff up as he goes along.

(not a supporter, think he will lose a general election)

he has already released a statement saying he misspoke: he meant the doctors who performed an illegal abortion should be prosecuted.

Yeah - but he DIDNT misspeak... Matthews said 'For the woman?" And Trump emphatically stated 'Yes'. That kind of 'misstatement' is the kind of thing that crashes markets and kills people when you're President.

Interesting hot take.

Welcome to the United States, where the laws are made up and the punishments don't matter.

He didn't misspeak, he got caught with his pants down and now he is lying to cover his backside.

Wow. Trump just stepped in a huge pile of **** there. Can't wait to hear his apologists try to polish this triple bowl ringing turf.

His campaign did a u-turn on this, saying that instead the doctors should be punished.

Still find it unfathomable that people actually think that Trump isn't a goddamn moron.

Do you think women who have an abortion should be punished?

People who kill their kids should be punished. They should receive the death penalty. As should doctors who murder their patients.

WOW! Thank God you will never be president. We don't need religious zealots in the White House.

More like he realized that he screwed up by revealing how he feels, and is now trying to catch up on it. Pity he doesn't have someone to throw under the bus and blame for letting us know how much a creep he really is.

I didn't mention religion. This thread isn't about how much you hate religion.

Matthews went out of his way to get Trump to clarify, and he (Trump) either wasn't paying attention to Matthews' very clear question, or he's too wrapped up in himself to think his own dumb words will come back to bite him. He didn't misspeak. He ****ed up.

Morons have recognition problems amongst themselves.

You do know that Trump until the race for the Whitehouse supported a woman's right to chose, don't you?

He supported partial birth abortion, at one point. Hmm...

Am I the only one who shakes her head at Trump's complete lack of....I don't know...integrity?

Look, I understand that you obsessively hate religion, but that isn't the topic here.

I don't hate religion; I hate hypocrisy.

I dont think thats the way he feels at all. He probably didnt know the rules for pandering to the GOP base. I mean, punishing a woman for having an abortion is as crazy as hell, and since much of the GOP positions are by definition crazy as hell, he probably just assumed thats what they think.

You know this guy could really care less about the legality of abortion, as long as his kids can fly to Europe to get one when/if they need one. He's just positioning himself for popularity.

which would lend even more support to the idea that he misspoke, wouldn't you(have to)agree?

If that is what you need to believe....LOL

That wouldn't square with his claim that he meant to say "doctor". If he supports the right to choose, why would he want to punish the doctor either?

That is all Trump does, Misspeaks, it is easier to pick out the few truths he has spoken than the long list of lies, opps, misspeaks.

if any of that drivel was true then why did he immediately backtrack? You didn't think he would know the histrionics would hit level RED on the left after he said this? read your own posts in this thread. the moral superiority around here is blinding.
